Bali braces for bird flu epidemic

BY MULIARTA ON 2013-01-07
The local health authorities have begun implementing the necessary measures to deal with the ongoing outbreak of avian influenza affecting the duck population, and the possible spillover of the disease into the human population.

The measures have been taken following confirmed reports of avian influenza killing thousands of ducks in farming areas in three separate regencies: Buleleng, Tabanan and Klungkung.

Laboratory tests have confirmed that the ducks were killed by the new, more malignant strain of the avian influenza virus known as H5N1 Clade 2.3.2. A similar strain of the virus killed hundreds of thousands of ducks across farming regions in Java weeks before the first reported case in Bali.

Provincial Animal Husbandry and Health Agency head Putu Sumantra stated that preventing the spread of the disease was his top priority.

“Our priority now is preventing the disease from spreading into vulnerable regencies, like Badung, Gianyar and Jembrana, which all have sizeable duck populations,” Sumantra stated, adding that local animal husbandry agencies across the island had been alerted to implement preventive measures.

One effective preventive measure is selected culling, in which infected ducks and ducks at infected farms are killed and the carcasses burned before being buried under the supervision of the agency’s officials.

“As many as 1,500 ducks have been culled; the farmers will get financial compensation from the local administration,” he said, adding that the agency was still negotiating with the local administrations in the affected areas on the amount of compe

Mothers in one of South Africa's poorest areas are drinking heavily to deliberately damage their unborn babies - just so they can claim disability benefit.
Life is so tough with unemployment high and crime rampant in South Africa's Eastern Cape, that a newborn baby represents a form of income for the mothers.
State benefits mean 250 South African rand (£20) per child per month for an impoverished family. But disability allowance is a far more lucrative 1200 rand a month (£85).
It has led to a spike in the numbers of babies born with disabilities.
Mothers who drink heavily during pregnancy run a far higher risk of giving birth to a child born with what is known as Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The condition is usually irreversible and can mean speech problems, physical deformities, learning difficulties and behavioural issues.
More than three-quarters of the children at the Miracle Kids Centre in Helenvale suffer from FASD.
A woman drinks illegal alcohol
South Africa has the highest prevalence of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
The centre manager Genevieve Hendricks says the children struggle at school, end up dropping out and then many turn to crime to get by.
"It's so sad to see," she says cradling one of her young charges. "But we need to educate these mothers to know they are causing a lifetime of difficulties."
The Eastern Cape Liquor Board has now been prompted to launch a campaign to educate young mothers about the dangers of drinking heavily whilst pregnant.
South Africa has had the highest number of FASD cases in the world since 2002, according to the World Health Organisation.  http://news.sky.com/story/1033939/south-africa-women-drinking-to-harm-babies

NEPAL-CNP staffs fall ill while searching Dhurbe

Sunday, January 6th, 2013

Employees of the Chitwan National Park deployed to trace a rampaging elephant named ‘Dhurbe’ have started taking ill due to cold. “Two to four employees are falling ill every day due to cold,” Kantipur quoted conservation officer of the park, Maheshwor Dhakal, as saying. The victims are suffering from cold, cough and fever.
The employees are forced to sleep in tents as the park lacks human resources to help them in their search for the pachyderm, Dhakal said.
“We have been searching for the elephant for the past two weeks. We are carrying out our duties by taking medicines,” an employee said.
According to National Park source, although more than 150 employees, including technicians, are searching for the elephant, the whereabouts of the tusker are yet to be found.
Krishna Chandra Poudel, secretary at the Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation, said search for the tusker has been intensified. http://www.nepalmountainnews.com/cms/2013/01/06/cnp-staffs-fall-ill-while-searching-dhurbe/

Blindness, coma, death....experts give warning

By Nicholas Jones
5:30 AM Monday Jan 7, 2013
Health experts say Kiwis travelling to Indonesia should pay close attention to the source of any alcohol they drink, and avoid jugs of pre-made liquor.
Dr Leo Schep, a toxicologist at the National Poisons Centre in Dunedin, said very little pure methanol was needed to have deadly results.
"All you need is half a millilitre per kilogram of body weight, so if you're 80kg, you need 40ml of pure methanol to have a potentially lethal dose."
Dr Schep said physical symptoms were similar to drunkenness and could appear vague at first.
If untreated, the poisoning could lead to rapid breathing, blindness, a coma and seizures which could lead to brain damage.
About one-third of serious poisoning victims suffered irreversible visual impairment, but victims' lives could be saved if they received medical treatment quickly. The antidote was ethanol, or alcohol, which acted as a blocking agent.
"If they are out drinking alcohol, they are administering the antidote at the same time...
