Bird Flu in Nuwakot: DoLS slaughters 400 chickens

, JAN 04 - Around 400 chicken s were slaughtered at Rai Basti of Chaughada VDC-1 in Nuwakot on Thursday after authorities confirmed bird flu in the area.
A team from the Department of Livestock Services (DoLS) led by Dr Nar Bahadur Rajawar reached Rai Basti in the morning and began the culling process. Some villagers reluctant to get rid of their diseased fowls agreed to cooperate with the DoLS team after they were informed about the risks of H5N1 virus.
Bird flu was suspected at Rai Basti after domesticated chicken s started dying at the hatchery of local villager, Dhurba Rai, from Tuesday. The Central Veterinary Laboratory confirmed the virus on Wednesday after testing the samples from the dead poultry.
The virus outspread was apparently caused after the fowls at Rai's hatchery pecked the discarded entrails of three chicken s that he had bought in Kathmandu a few days earlier. Nearly 200 chicken s in the village died in the wake. The outspread got worse as the villagers disposed of their dead poultry on the roadside.
The DoLS team has advised the residents of Rai Basti not to import any poultry product for the time being.
