The cases occurred in Isiro, bustling market town near the border with Uganda, and involve a different strain of which killed 16 people there last month, according to MSF.

Ebola is transmitted from birds to monkeys and humans, and causes internal bleeding that kills up to 90 percent of the victims.

Anja from Weggheleire, MSF medical coordinator in the region, said a victim's blood samples confirmed Ebola in Isiro, and that there are three other suspected cases being treated at a local hospital maintained by the entity.

"We can not speak of a direct link between the two epidemics, I think unfortunately it's just pure coincidence," said De Weggheleire.

MSF warned that because of the precariousness of the Congolese health system, it will be difficult to prevent the disease from spreading outside the city.
