More than 25,500 fowl die in S. Sulawesi
Wed, January 09 2013,
More than 25,500 fowl have died in Sidenreng Rappang (Sidrap) regency in South Sulawesi over the past month. The number is believed to be increasing.
Sidrap Husbandry Agency head Asis Syam said on Tuesday that the actual number could be higher as it was possible that many farmers had not yet filed reports with the agency.
“The dead fowl were positive for bird flu,” he added.
Of the 25,500 dead fowl, most were ducks (21,100). More than 4,000 were chickens.
Sidrap regency is one of the biggest poultry producers in South Sulawesi and has previously experienced a bird flu epidemic. Hundreds of fowl die of bird flu every year in the regency.
According to the agency, the fowl population stood at 7.3 million.
Asis said the agency had called on farmers to immediately burn the carcasses of dead fowl, adding that the agency did not have enough vaccines to inoculate the fowl.
“We still need around 7.3 million vaccines,” he pointed out. http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2013/01/09/more-25500-fowl-die-s-sulawesi.html
Luweero to be declared Ebola free
Publish Date: Jan 09, 2013
The Ministry of Health will declare Luweero district Ebola Free on January 16, if no new cases are registered in the area, the Permanent Secretary Asuman Lukwago has said.
The declaration will follow the completion of the 42 days countdown period since the last patient was discharged from the isolation Centre. It comes at a time when the ministry has just declared Kabale and Ibanda free of Marburg.
The countdown period is a prerequisite of the World Health Organization requiring any affected country to monitor the situation for 42 days before finally declaring an end to an outbreak.
Lukwago said the declaration will be made in Luweero alone; this he says is to avoid cases where new outbreak can occur.
“Due to the repeated out breaks we have decided to declare district by district free from the out breaks meaning that if Ebola is declared free in Luweero, we shall declare it free in that district” he said.
“But we will continue to urge Ugandans to be alert and inform us of anybody with the symptoms so that our system can quickly identify any body with the disease,” Lukwago added.
The Permanent Secretary said his ministry is working with the Environment and Wildlife ministries to ensure that the animals and birds that spread both Ebola and Marburg disease are wiped out.
“Our experts are telling us that these diseases Marburg and Ebola could be carried by some special birds and animals which have been cited in some mines and caves in some parts of mid-western Uganda especially Kamwenge.
He stressed that they were working with those ministries to wipe out the affected birds and animals as they carry out research on the diseases and how they are related with birds and animals.
Ebola and Marburg are both highly infectious disease, spread mostly through contact with body fluids, and have high case fatalities. Symptoms include bleeding, diarrhea and vomiting and while there is no cure for both diseases, some patients survive through treatment of symptoms.
Three people died from the recent outbreak of the Ebola virus and two of the dead were from one family in Luweero district about 75 kilometers North of Kampala.
The new outbreak came just weeks after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Uganda Ebola free. The Ebola outbreak was confirmed following laboratory tests that turned out positive.

New Jersey boy not allowed back to school without flu shot
Published January 08, 2013
A 4-year-old boy from New Jersey was asked not to return to his school without a flu shot. But his parents say the child is allergic to the raw egg in the vaccine.
Jeremy Pereira was home playing on an iPad instead of attending school on Monday. Jeremy is allergic to egg, which is present in the flu vaccine. His parents won't expose him but without the shot his school won't let him back until April.
The Pereiras say they had a letter from Jeremy's pediatrician explains his egg allergy. But the boy's doctors recommended giving him the vaccine and then judging his reaction. However, his parents wouldn't do this.
New Jersey is one of the only states in the nation to require flu shots for young schoolchildren, from six months through 5 years old..

Nurse with no flu shot refuses to wear mask, is fired
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A nurse who refused to wear a surgical mask after receiving an exemption from a mandatory flu vaccination was fired for violating her hospital's policy.
Carla Brock, a board-certified holistic nurse who has worked 11 years at Cox South Hospital here, said she is speaking out because she believes her hospital's new requirement to wear a mask if a staffer opts out of the flu vaccine amounts to a scarlet letter. CoxHealth, which owns four hospitals in southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas, says it simply is putting the patient first.
"I love my job, and I loved the people I worked with," the pre-admissions nurse said. But "I have spiritual and religious reasons to not have those toxins in my body."
Mandated flu shots already are part of a national debate that pits employee rights against what some say is patient safety. Most recently, in December, an Indiana hospital fired eight employees who refused to get flu shots, according to ABC News.
Brock's situation adds another layer to the debate. This is the first year that CoxHealth employees are required either to get the vaccination or produce paperwork showing an exemption, according to Stacy Fender, media relations coordinator for CoxHealth. In the past, flu shots were strongly recommended.
In early September, Brock sought and was granted a religious exemption although she admits she's more "spiritual" than "religious."
"We jumped through the hoops," she said. "We did all the right things."
But CoxHealth's new policy also requires employees who receive an exemption to wear a surgical mask while working, which Brock did starting Dec. 31.

I can only guess how many sick or suspected, we are not being told about. If the people are buying, cleaning and cooking all these birds, then the number will soon be hard to hide. We usually don't find out till a few days later if at all.
Expect a few suspected cases soon, just so they can act like they are watching for them. Flu Outbreak Leads To Visitor Limits At S. Central Hospitals
Minn. (WCCO) – The southern part of the state is described as the epicenter of the flu outbreak this year.
Later this week, hospitals and clinics will announce visitor restrictions to help stop the spread, and some have already taking action in hit hard areas like Mankato and New Ulm.
Dr. Joan Krikava, medical director at New Ulm Medical Center, says the numbers are staggering. They’re seeing more people with the flu now than they did at the height of the H1N1 outbreak in 2009.
“We are seeing 50 to 100 extra patients in our clinics and hospitals. That’s about double the number of patients we see in a day. And in our hospital half of our patients have influenza,” Krikava said.
To prevent the spread of the flu, hospitals in this part of the state have implemented visitor restrictions. New Ulm has restrictions in place, and Sleepy Eye, which is 15 miles west, has closed the doors to its medical center to visitors.
Eleven Illinois hospitals had to turn away most patients from their emergency rooms Monday night because of a surge of people with flu symptoms.
The hospitals that were on bypass — a temporary diversion of ambulances to other hospitals because of the volume of patients — included Northwestern Memorial Hospital; University of Chicago Medical Center; Advocate Christ Medical Center; Swedish Covenant Hospital, and Presence of Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center. Only one hospital had gone off bypass as of 6:30 p.m...

Nidom said on Monday (7/1) that the spread of the H5N1 virus variant 232 is very difficult to predict and prevent, as propagated through the medium of water. "When in poultry [land] it's spread through the air. If through the air that we can count, the maximum distance is approximately 1 kilometer.
But if through the water can not be predicted, as far as the water flow model of the spread of the virus there, "he said. "So if the current flooding in the [river] Bengawan Solo, the automated downstream or estuary region will receive submissions from virus from upstream. "
Nidom added, the possibility of many and the size of the spread of this virus may result in death even more ducks in Indonesia, even to run out entirely. http://www.voaindonesia.com/content/pemerintah-indonesia-didesak-segera-atasi-penyebaran-virus-h5n1/1579608.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Deans Condemn Vaccine Ruse Used in Bin Laden Hunt
The deans of the nation’s top public health schools sent a letter toPresident Obama on Monday condemning the Central Intelligence Agency’s use of a vaccination campaign ruse in the hunt for Osama bin Laden. The letter was signed by deans at Columbia, Harvard, Johns Hopkins and nine other universities. The C.I.A. has admitted hiring a Pakistani doctor to give out hepatitis B vaccine, apparently in an effort to get DNA samples from the compound that it suspected was Bin Laden’s hide-out. That has caused a severe backlash against vaccination in Pakistan. Nine polio vaccinators have been shot dead, and the effort to fight polio there was halted for weeks. Deaths from measles also soared in 2012, to 306 from 64 the year before. Resistance to measles vaccine in the populous Sindh province was blamed.

Spike in flu forces emergency tent at Lehigh Valley Hospital, floods other facilities
First the bad news: Widespread influenza activity overspreading the nation is taking its toll in the Lehigh Valley and northwest New Jersey.
The good news is this year's flu vaccine is effective against the strain going around, according to a medical expert at St. Luke's University Health Network.
Cases piled up enough at Lehigh Valley Hospital to prompt the opening announced Monday of a second, temporary emergency department at its Salisbury Township campus.
The "mobile surge tent" set up outside the existing emergency department will begin accepting patients experiencing flu-like symptoms Tuesday, a Lehigh Valley Health Network news release said Monday. Patients with flu-like symptoms should still report to the main emergency entrance for treatment, according to the release.
Setting up the ancillary department is a proactive measure aimed at ensuring the best level of care and protection for patients.
It's too early to tell how long the tent will remain open until more patients are seen, said health network spokesman Matthew Burns. The hospital needs to get a better understanding of patients' conditions, he said.
"It could grow or it could only be there for a week," Burns said.
18 deaths reported in U.S.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that for the week ending Dec. 29, widespread influenza ac..
