In MERS scare, hospitals lose business to pharmacies

Many residents here are avoiding hospitals because they fear contracting the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).
Waleed Al-Suhail, director general of Al-Jedaani Hospital in the Safa neighborhood, admitted that there has been a 70 percent drop in patients and visitors since the latest MERS outbreak.
However, Al-Suhail rejected rumors circulating on social networking sites and in local newspapers that some patients and staff of the hospital have been infected with the virus.
He confirmed that many Jeddah residents prefer these days to go to pharmacies because there are no crowds. Doctors have indicated that people are more likely to get the virus in crowded places.
Ahmad Abbas, a pharmacist, told Arab News that many more people have been coming to his pharmacy recently for medicines because they are afraid of going to hospitals.
“The virus is airborne and spreads through breathing in crowded places. But people make the mistake of going to pharmacies to buy their medicines. Some medicines can affect individuals negatively," he said.
A customer at a pharmacy here, Ahmad Abdul Azim, said people are afraid to go to hospitals, especially emergency rooms. “People tend to avoid crowded places such as hospitals because they don’t want to get the virus,” he said.

Abdulrahman Al-Adwani, a customer, said people are risking their lives by going to pharmacies without a prescription from a doctor. http://www.arabnews.com/news/578891

8 ebola suspects freed by relatives in Sierra Leone

FREETOWN, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Some eight ebola suspects admitted at the isolation ward of the Koindu Community Health Center in the Kailahun district, east of Sierra Leone, are now at large after their relatives stormed the facility on Monday night and set them free, Health Minister Miatta Kargbo told journalists Tuesday.
"We had wanted to transfer them to the regional isolation center at the Kenema Government Hospital for further observation," she said, "but their relatives refused."
"We do not know their whereabouts as of now but an intensive search is being made to trace them to prevent them coming in contact with people. We suspect that they might have been taken across the border," she added.
"Our surveillance team reports that the relatives are claiming that the suspects needed traditional healings instead of western medicine," the minister maintained.
"I am appealing to these relatives to return them to the health authorities so they will have the necessary treatment meted out to them," the minister urged. She also reiterated that "ebola is a dangerous disease and had no cure."
She said that ministers and parliamentarians from the district have been dispatched from the capital to the affected areas to "persuade and sensitize the families of the patients on the need for them to have proper medical treatment."
"All medical resources have been propositioned throughout the country to contain any further outbreak," Minister Kargbo said.  http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/xinhua-news-agency/140527/8-ebola-suspects-freed-relatives-sierra-leone

Ebola patient in Sierra Leone pulled from hospital by family

Woman can infect others, her family members and also those in community, health official says

Last Updated: May 27, 2014 10:59 AM ET
Relatives of an Ebola patient in Sierra Leone took her home from a community health centre despite protests from medical staff, risking spreading the deadly and highly infectious disease, a senior health official said on Tuesday.
The family said they did not trust the medical system and feared she would die if a transfer to the general hospital in the town of Kenema went ahead, Amara Jambai, the health ministry's director of disease prevention and control, said.
Lawmakers and community leaders would try to talk to family members and persuade them to return her to hospital, he said.

There has been no news of the woman, whose identity has been kept secret, since she was taken from Koindu to her village nearby, Jambai said by telephone from the capital Freetown.
Koindu shares a border with what the World Health Organization (WHO) says is the Ebola virus disease epicentre of Guéckédou in Guinea.
Asked about the risk posed by her removal from hospital, Jambai said: "She can infect others, her family members and also those in the community. There is no news of her condition because she has been taken away so we need to search and find her and make sure that it [Ebola] doesn't spread.".. http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/ebola-patient-in-sierra-leone-pulled-from-hospital-by-family-1.2655490

Japanese Govt set to prepare for possible MERS outbreak

Japanese Govt set to prepare for possible MERS outbreak

The Yomiuri Shimbun Alarmed at the soaring number of people infected with a new strain of coronavirus mainly in Middle Eastern countries, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry will soon make arrangements for a potential domestic outbreak of the disease, which could result in such illnesses as severe pneumonia, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.
The new virus strain is known as the MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) coronavirus. The number of infections has been surging in the Middle East since April, and cases have recently been confirmed in the United States among people who have returned there from Middle Eastern countries, ministry officials said.
The number of people with the disease, which stood at 206 worldwide during the period from spring 2012 to the end of March this year, more than doubled to 429 in the roughly two months from April to May 23, according to the World Health Organization. About 30 percent of the infections have resulted in fatalities, the WHO said.
The origin of the virus was unknown until recently. However, many experts now believe that it is likely to have come from camels and that the disease can be contracted from touching camels or drinking raw camel milk. There have also been many reports of hospital-acquired infections.
One theory suggests that the current rise in the coronavirus infection may be due to a lack of preventive measures against the disease and the fact that it is now breeding season for camels.
The disease tends to develop within two weeks after infection, causing patients to experience a high fever, cough, severe pneumonia and other symptoms, ministry officials said.
The ministry has issued written instructions to local governments and relevant organizations to conduct medical checkups this month to detect the virus and report information on the results to the ministry. The checkups pertain to people who visit medical institutions after returning from the Middle East and are found to have:
—A high fever of 38 C or higher and severe respiratory symptoms; or
—Visited a medical institution while staying in the Mideast or had contact with camels or drank raw camel milk there, even if their symptoms are mild.
The ministry also plans to study which medical institutions should care for patients if the MERS coronavirus-caused illness is detected domestically, along with what treatment arrangements should be made to deal with the situation, the officials said.
The virus is currently considered unlikely to cause human-to-human infection if there is no intensive contact with an infected patient, they said. http://the-japan-news.com/news/article/0001308685

Air conditioners may transfer corona virus
Air conditioners may transfer corona virus

»» Rely on air circulation inside the cabin .. specialist for the day:

Air crashes aircraft transmits the virus «Corona»

Decrease font Enlarge font

Revealed a specialist in the field of aeronautical engineering for "Today" that the civil aircraft depends on the principle of recycling cab air and pump adapted, so as to relieve the load on the engine, pointing to the high probability of transmission of HIV syndrome Middle East respiratory "Corona" when crashes HVAC systems in the plane.
The flight engineer Hassan Bin Mansour: "relies most (if were not all) civil aircraft business to recycle cab air and pumped adapted thereafter, so as to relieve the load on the motor, which pulls them air and enters into a complex process of filtration and cooling until it is ready to pump refrigerated compartment (passenger cabin), and noted that the primary source of air conditioner is the engine, have adopted the technology recycling cab air and use 37% to 50% in general, and so as I said, to ease the load on the engine and saving fuel mainly.
"The air is withdrawn from the Shabak button below along both sides of the cab (a place to sit next to the window under the left foot for« Wright »grille that extends along the cab, which pulls cab air in preparation for recycling), where the air is pulled through the clamp mentioned in point No. 3 , and passes on the filter is called the HEPA Filter and which purifies the air of impurities and even bacteria, viruses, micro, which up to 0.01 microns, and this of course includes avian influenza viruses and virus Corona, for illustration only HEPA means High Efficiency Particulate Air or filter The high efficiency of objects infinitesimal.
And about the possibility of injury if McCann is possible if someone is sick in the aircraft cabin, said: "I believe as possible if the pressure generated by the leaching high and exceeds the mechanical air intake, which is below and brought the spray to a remote location, especially if you do not cover the patient's nose or mouth, But thanks to God remain probabilistic weaker than the place is closed and there is no drag and recycling of air as it is located by plane (small room, bus, etc. ....), as the probability of infection of course very high in the plane in my opinion if the air conditioning system to hang.
The virus Corona covers a wide range of types of viruses that can cause colds, and in some cases can cause a syndrome of acute respiratory infections (SARS), and in most cases of infection with this virus the symptoms are similar, such as high fever, body aches, sore throat, and was nominated and cough, and in most cases these symptoms persist for two days and then disappear.
The Ministry of Health with the World Health Organization to find out more medical information about this virus, and include ways of transmission of types (Corona) other influenza in general include: direct transmission through droplets from the patient during coughing or sneezing, and the transition is direct through touching surfaces and objects contaminated with the virus, and then touching their mouth or nose or eye, and direct contact with the patients, and the possibility of transmission through infected camels and bats.  http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.alyaum.com%2FNews%2Fart%2F141331.html

RICHMOND -- State health officials are investigating whether several Virginians may have been exposed to Middle East respiratory syndrome or MERS.
Dr. Laurie Forlano, the deputy state epidemiologist with the Virginia Department of Health, tells 13 News Now that they are monitoring "several" Virginians who were on airplanes and may have come into contact with people who were sick.
She stresses that no cases have been confirmed in Virginia and they’re keeping track of each region of the state, including Hampton Roads.
Dr. Forlano says "If a doctor suspects that their patient may have MERS, they have to notify the local health department. The Virginia Department of Health then works with clinicians to determine whether testing for MERS is necessary."
It takes anywhere from 24-48 hours to get results from those tests.
Three people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with MERS: a man in Orlando, Florida, one in Indiana and one in Illinois.
Overall, about 600 people worldwide have had the respiratory illness and about 175 people have died.
Dr. Forlano says she has faith that the military is currently working on future vaccinations for American service members who travel to the Arabian Peninsula.
A Portsmouth Naval spokesperson tells 13News Now they have not heard of a vaccine being created for MERS, but they have developed a test for it.
Meantime, the US Navy Bureau of Medicine & Surgery tweeted at 12:20 p.m. "Military treatment facilities @USNavy & @USMC Public Health Center released guidance on #MERSCoV."  Click here to read that information.
MERS belongs to the coronavirus family that includes the common cold and SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome. It was first reported in 2012 in Saudi Arabia.
Health officials say there is no vaccine or cure and there's no specific treatment except to relieve symptoms, which include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Not all those exposed to the virus become ill.
