Hong Kong watches Coronavirus case in UK

Coronavirus case under watch

February 16, 2013
The Department of Health is monitoring a novel coronavirus infection confirmed by the UK's Health Protection Agency.

The patient, a UK resident, does not have any recent travel history, and is recovering from a mild respiratory illness and is currently well.

This latest case brings the total number of confirmed cases globally to 12, of which four have been diagnosed in the UK.

The department said, according to the World Health Organisation, although this new case indicates further person-to-person transmission, no sustained person-to-person transmission has been identified.

The centre will seek more information on the recent cases of the illness and monitor related developments.

It said no human infection has been identified so far in Hong Kong.

Travellers returning from novel coronavirus affected countries with respiratory symptoms should wear a facial mask and seek medical attention and reveal their travel history to their doctor. http://www.news.gov.hk/en/categories/health/html/2013/02/20130216_200338.shtml?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

10 Days Grace

As of right now, Ncov will be allowed a 10 day grace period. That means there are no travel restrictions anywhere, no actual special screening at points of entry, no travel warnings, alerts or thermal screening.
Now that the stuff is trying to go h2h, I think there should be a little more notice to travelers and the public in general. Without trying to single out any particular country, we all know it is harbored in the middle east and continues to become worrisome to all health services. They are just having a hard time explaining it to all the common folk.
Of course they wouldn't dream of closing off all their buddies in the M.E., but pretending it is not about to become a problem is like watching them intentionally hide the seriousness of what just happened.
Health agencies are really scared out of their shorts, but can't tell you that. 3 cases in a week or so and running down all their contacts is not something they do everyday. A mild case, a case with H1N1,  VAGUE REPORTS on ages and conditions.. you get the picture don't you?
Health agencies are telling travelers to report suspicious symptoms after 10 days from return.  That means 10 days for the guy to cough in your face!
But  don't worry, They will tell you in plenty of time to prepare.. like maybe in 10 days.

Any person with severe acute respiratory infection:

Further case of novel coronavirus 2012 reported in the United Kingdom

Advice for travellers

This confirmed case without a recent travel history suggests that human-to-human transmission has occurred in the UK. However the risk of UK residents contracting infection in the UK is very low. There continue to be no travel restrictions to the Arabian Peninsula and the risk to travellers remains very low.
Travellers returning from the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding countries, with mild respiratory symptoms are most likely to have a common respiratory illness such as a cold.  However, if severe respiratory symptoms develop, such as shortness of breath, within ten days of returning from these countries, medical advice should be sought from the GP orNHS Direct. Returning travellers should mention which countries they have visited... http://www.nathnac.org/travel/news/cov_140213.htm

WHO continues to investigate novel coronavirus

13 February 2013 To date, nine cases of human infection with the novel coronavirus have been confirmed in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Two of the cases were from Jordan, five from Saudi Arabia and two from Qatar. Five of these patients died. Two clusters were detected – one within a family in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the other among health care workers in a hospital in Jordan.
The WHO Regional Office held a technical consultative meeting in Cairo, Egypt, from 14 to 15 January 2013, to: look at the natural history of this new disease; examine the source of infection, mode of transmission, transmissibility of infection and degree of infectiousness; assess laboratory diagnostic capabilities; and interpret test results. The consultation brought together relevant public health experts from the three countries in the Region that have reported cases of human infection with novel coronavirus, in addition to key partners, WHO collaborating centres and experts from the WHO Regional Office and headquarters. http://www.emro.who.int/media/news/who-explores-coronavirus.html

No cases of novel coronavirus in UAE

Ministry of Health collaborating with WHO on monitoring virus
 February 16, 2013
Abu Dhabi: Although 11 registered cases of a new Sars-like virus have been reported worldwide, no cases have been recorded in the UAE yet, a senior official at the Ministry of Health told Gulf News.
The ministry is also closely monitoring the spread of the virus, known as novel coronavirus or NCoV, which was first identified last year.

“The ministry is collaborating closely with the World Health Organisation on this issue, and so far no residents have been diagnosed with the virus in the UAE,” the official said.
“This therefore means that the virus is under control, and has not spread to too many people. It also means that there is no cause for panic as the virus is not spreading at a dangerous pace,” he added.
The virus was first noted when WHO issued an international alert last September, saying a virus previously unknown in humans had infected a Qatari man who had recently been in Saudi Arabia.
Since then, 11 people have been affected by it, including two confirmed cases reported in Britain last week. According to the WHO updates on the virus, the first of the two cases is a man with a travel history to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The other is a UK resident related to the first patient, with no travel history outside the UK. Both have been hospitalised in intensive care units.
According to the official, there are also no travel restrictions in the UAE at present.

“We have received no such recommendations from the WHO and its regional office in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, so no restrictions are in place,” he said.
According to the WHO, common symptoms among confirmed cases of NCoV include acute, respiratory illness with fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties,
Health authorities have been on the watch since NcoV was reported, especially as it belongs to the same family as Sars , or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which killed about a tenth of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide in late 2002 and early 2003.
A WHO update released last Wednesday states that the two new cases in Britain suggest the virus can be transmitted from person to person. It however adds that “the risk of sustained person-to-person transmission appears to be very low on the basis of current evidence”. So far, only five of the 11 people infected by NCoV have died.
The WHO does however recommend general measures to prevent respiratory illnesses, including avoiding close contact with anyone who shows symptoms such as coughing and sneezing, as well as good hand hygiene. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/health/no-cases-of-novel-coronavirus-in-uae-1.1146877?utm_content=1.1146877&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_campaign=No_cases_of_novel_coronavirus_in_UAE&localLinksEnabled=false&utm_term=UAE_news_RSS_feed

WHO Novel coronavirus infection – update

Novel coronavirus infection – update

The United Kingdom (UK) has informed WHO of another confirmed case of infection with the novel coronavirus (NCoV). This is the third case confirmed in the country this month and is in the same family cluster as the two recently confirmed cases.
The latest confirmed case does not have recent travel history outside the UK. The case is recovering from mild respiratory illness and is currently well.
The confirmation with NCoV in this case with no recent travel history indicates that infection was acquired in the UK. Although this new case offers further indications of person-to-person transmission, no sustained person-to-person transmission has been identified.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is following up on all close contacts who may have been exposed to the recently confirmed cases.
As of 16 February 2013, WHO is informed of a total of 12 confirmed cases of human infection with NCoV, including five deaths.
Based on the current situation and available information, WHO encourages all Member States to continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and to carefully review any unusual patterns. Testing for the new coronavirus should be considered in patients with unexplained pneumonias, or in patients with unexplained severe, progressive or complicated respiratory illness not responding to treatment.
Any clusters of SARI or SARI in healthcare workers should be thoroughly investigated, regardless of where in the world they occur.
New cases and clusters of the NCoV should be reported promptly both to national health authorities and to WHO.
WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event nor does it recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied.
WHO continues to closely monitor the situation.

fucked up reporting? UPDATE

the story is a mix of corona in England and a boy in Queensland Australia, that was scratched by a bat.. so it is still a fucked up report, unless an 8 yr old is confirmed in England, and we don't know 2 of the ages right now.

Sars-like Virus Contracts another Family Member

Submitted by Bilyana Petrinska on 2013, February 16
UK has come across third case of lethal Sars-like virus. An eight-year old boy is suffering from a new type of coronavirus, akin to Sars.
The boy was bitten by the bat, two and half months ago, but did not take any medical treatment. After he suffered fits and delirium, he was admitted to a hospital.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that another person who has contracted the virus has a travelling history. He had recently travelled to the Middle East and Pakistan. He is in an intensive care unit at a Manchester hospital after getting infected by the virus. With the latest case, the global mark for the disease has reached 12.
This patient has mild respiratory illness and has been kept in isolation considering person-to-person transmission of virus.
Earlier, contagious nature of the disease was not considered, but after a family member of another patient was found positive with the disease, doctors have started to consider the same.
"Although this case appears to be due to person-to-person transmission, the risk of infection in contacts in most circumstances is still considered to be low", said Professor John Watson, head of the respiratory diseases department at the HPA. Doctors are working to reduce the risk associated with the virus http://visitbulgaria.info/18796-sars-virus-contracts-another-family-member

Beta Coronavirus Umrah Link Raises Concerns

Recombinomics Commentary 01:00
February 16, 2013
The Association of British Hujjaj (Pilgrims) UK a National Hajj/Umrah specific organization has expressed it’s deep concerns about the risk of a new Sars-like virus known as the ‘Coronavirus’ that is posing a potential threat to Hajj/Umrah pilgrims.
After returning from the performance of Umrah, a person is fighting for his life in a UK hospital after having contracted an infection from this virus. This incident raised an alarm when his son also caught the infection from him which shows evidence that the virus can spread from person to person.
The above comments indicate the index case (60M) for the UK cluster was infected while performing Umrah, raising concerns that the novel coronavirus is widespread in Saudi Arabia.  The export of an infectious disease always raises concerns that the disease in the exporting country is widespread.  The concerns were increased when the virus was confirmed in two relatives who had not traveled outside of the UK.  Most concerning was the presence of the virus in a contact who recovered without hospitalization or medical treatment, confirming mild or asymptomatic cases who would not seek medical attention.

The current surveillance for the novel coronavirus targets severe hospitalized cases.  Prior to the most recent case, all prior confirmed cases had severe disease.  However, even in cases with severe disease, such as the surviving members of the cluster in Jordan, as well as two of the four cases in the Riyadh cluster, detection of the virus was problematic.  The false negatives, as well as the targeting of severe cases have raised concerns that the confirmed cases represented a small fraction of the human cases.

In addition to the index case for the UK cluster, the other case in the UK, a Qatari national (49M) who was transported to England last September by airbus also developed symptoms while preforming Umrah in Saudi Arabia.  Although his symptoms subsided, they reappeared in Qatar prior to transport to England.  Moreover, the first confirmed case, a Saudi national (60M) was diagnosed in Jeddah, which is close to Mecca.

This geographic clustering, as well as the Riyadh cluster and case (45M) raises concerns that the virus is common in Saudi Arabia, but largely missed due to testing protocol.  A recent paper on French Haaj attendees cites testing of nasal swabs, which were negative.  However, the WHO recommendations for testing cite a lower concentration of virus in the upper respiratory tract and recommends testing samples from the lower respiratory tract.

Therefore, more testing of samples from the lower respiratory tract in severe cases, as well as expended testing of milder cases, as well as those infected with influenza is dictated by the results obtained for the latest cluster in the UK.

Mild Beta Coronavirus UK Case Raises Pandemic Concerns

Mild Beta Coronavirus UK Case Raises Pandemic Concerns

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) can confirm a third case of novel coronavirus infection in a family cluster, following the confirmed diagnosis of two cases announced earlier this week. The patient, who is a UK resident and does not have any recent travel history, is recovering from a mild respiratory illness and is currently well.

The above HPA confirmation expand the latest novel beta coronaviruscluster to three, which includes the first confirmation of mild case, significantly increasing the pandemic risk.  This cluster clearly signals human to human (H2H) transmission, because the index case (60M) developed symptoms while performing Umrah in Saudi Arabia.  Therefore, the confirmation of the virus in his son in England, who has no recent travel outside of the country, confirms the H2H transmission, which also applies to the third family member.

However, the fact that the latest case was mild, suggests that thesymptomatic health care workers associated with the first case treated in the UK (a Qatar resident who also developed symptoms while performing Umrah last August) were also infected, but tested negative due to less than ideal collection dates.  Similarly, the cluster in Jordan was also likely significantly larger that the 2 confirmed fatal cases and the many contacts with severe cases of pneumonia, who also tested negative.

The lab confirmed mild case also suggests that many of the symptomatic cases linked to the Haaj were also infected, even though nasal swabs were negative.

Expansion of testing of milder cases is now warranted, as is testing of cases that are H1N1pdm09 positive, which was found in the index case of the most recent cluster. http://www.recombinomics.com/News/02151302/nCoV_Mild_Pandemic.html?
