ATTACKERS KILL 3 SOUTH KOREAN DOCTORS IN NIGERIA

Feb 10, 5:03 AM EST

POTISKUM, Nigeria (AP) -- Attackers in northeastern Nigeria killed three South Korean doctors, beheading one of the physicians, in the latest onslaught targeting health workers in a nation under assault by a radical Islamic sect, officials said Sunday.
The deaths Saturday night of the doctors in Potiskum, a town in Yobe state long under attack by the sect known as Boko Haram, comes after gunmen killed at least nine women administering polio vaccines in Kano, the major city of Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north.
The two attacks raise new questions over whether the extremist sect, targeted by Nigeria's police and military, has picked newer, softer targets in its guerrilla campaign of shootings and bombings across the nation.
The attackers apparently targeted the South Korean doctors inside their home, an official at General Hospital in Potiskum, a government-run health facility, told The Associated Press. The South Korean doctors had no security guards at their residence and typically trave.. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/A/AF_NIGERIA_VIOLENCE?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

3 Chinese doctors slain in Northern Nigeria

Armed men killed three Chinese doctors in a pre-dawn attack Sunday in Nigeria’s town of Potiskum, Yobe state, police said, in the latest such killings in recent months.
“Unknown attackers scaled over the fence of an apartment in Potiskum housing three Chinese doctors around 1:00 am and slit their throats. No arrest has been made,” Yobe State police commissioner Sanusi Rufa’i told AFP.
Residents said the Chinese were employees of the state ministry of health and had been living in the volatile city for one year.
Rufa’i did not say if the Islamist group Boko Haram which has been active in Potiskum, some 100 kilometres from state capital Damaturu was responsible for the attack.
“It is still premature to point any accusing fingers but we have commenced investigation to unravel the killings,” he said.
A local resident said the bodies of the Chinese were found in their room Sunday morning by neighbours who forced the door open.
“This morning, it was discovered that three Chinese doctors have been slaughtered. People became worried when the doctors did not open their door in the morning,” a resident who did not want to be named, told AFP.
The killings were the latest against Chinese nationals in recents months in the country’s restive northeast.  http://www.osundefender.org/?p=93651

Toll tops 65: Epidemic threat gets worse in Upper Dir

Published: February 9, 2013   The inclement weather has exacerbated the measles epidemic in Upper Dir, as fatalities have topped 65 since January.
Heavy snowfall and rain severed the roads network, leaving the Kalkot area of Kohistan disconnected from the rest of the country.
As thousands of people dealt with severe food and medical aid shortages for the seventh consecutive day, the spread of measles was compounded.
Social worker Malik Muhammad Ali told The Express Tribune that the district administration has yet to take steps to clear the area and open the Dir Kohistan Road.
“I am shocked. I told the district officials that the area has received tremendous snowfall and vaccinations must be carried out immediately but the requests had gone unnoticed,” he said.
He added that roads linked to other areas, including Dog Darra, Shaor, Biyar, Barikot and Goldai, are also closed and scores of people are stranded.
According to Ali, three children have died in Dog Dara, four in Shawor, two in Goldai and one in Barikot. He expressed fear that the death toll could increase.
The affected areas now include Shringle, Dog Darra, Gan Shal, Gowalarai, Shamtol, Bathrai, Barikot, Thal and Komrat.
“Almost every home has been hit by the deadly disease. Some people have decided to register an FIR against the district officials for their negligence,” he said.
The district administration has only carried out vaccination campaigns in four out of 13 affected areas, said Ali.
Commissioner Abid Wazir confirmed the death toll and cited the lack of resources as a major hurdle to reach the areas. At the same time, he claimed that all the link routes to the area will be reopened in the next couple of days. He denied any kind of food or medicines shortage.
According to him, illiteracy and poverty were the main factors for the high number of fatalities.
Furthermore, Wazir said that more vaccination drives cannot bear fruit unless cases are reported and swift action is taken.
He claimed that the provincial government had, in fact, formed vaccination teams to immunize every child in the region.
“I, along with the Executive District Officer (EDO) Health Wakeel Muhammad, have visited the areas and things will be controlled in the next couple of days,” he added.
Despite repeated attempts, EDO Muhammad could not be reached.

Urbana High grad interns at Army lab

Originally published February 10, 2013
Rebekah James remembers being a little put off by the sight of workers in what looked like spacesuits when she first visited the U.S. Army Research Institute of Infectious Diseases as an Urbana High School senior.
Fast forward a few years and James, now a senior studying biology at McDaniel College in Westminster, is accustomed to the sight.
While she is not yet qualified to work in a biohazard containment lab, James could be on her way. At 22, she is working 20 hours a week this semester as an intern with a team that studies the Ebola virus, which causes hemorrhagic fever and is fatal in up to 90 percent of cases.
"I deal hands-on with Ebola, but it's irradiated so I can't get infected at the level that I'm at," James said.
With the help of her adviser, James started interning at USAMRIID at Fort Detrick in high school because, she said, "I wanted to do something different."
The research institute at Fort Detrick has gained notoriety as the setting of the 1995 movie "Outbreak" and the workplace of Amerithrax suspect Bruce Ivins, a scientist who committed suicide in 2008.
"It's fun to be working at a place that's pretty infamous, either for good or bad," James said.
She liked the work so much that she continued the summer before college and each subsequent year with the exception of the summer before her sophomore year.
"I'm very interested in how things work in our body, especially immunology," James said. "I really like talking about the molecules and how they interact and how we get sick and how our body fights it off."
Dr. John Dye, principal investigator and immunologist in USAMRIID's virology division, directs the lab where James works. She receives college credit for her work there, but she has gone "above and beyond the normal expectation of a college student," Dye wrote in an email.
"Ms. James is a hard working, enthusiastic employee with a wonderful positive attitude," Dye wrote.
James' most recent work has included investigating how host proteins within a cell may allow someone to become infected with Ebola. She has also worked with antibodies as part of a team trying to develop a treatment for those infected with Ebola.
"If we better understand the human proteins that allow susceptibility to Ebola virus infection, we can attempt to generate countermeasures using that information," Dye wrote.
James, who enjoys reading and hiking, has learned much about lab work in her time at USAMRIID, including the use of several different techniques to develop treatment options. She hopes to eventually earn a master's degree in immunology or virology, she said.
She takes a lot of pride in her lab group.
"We're making vaccines and helping people, and I really like that," she said.  http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/news/display.htm?StoryID=146729#.URdyLaXpe5I

H5N1 outbreak in Kathmandu

, Feb 10: The rapid response team deployed by the District Veterinary Clinic, Kathmandu on Saturday culled all the remaining 2,610 chickens following confirmation of H5N1 virus in the poultry farm owned by Kishor Tandukar of Jitpurfedi- 1 Kathmandu.

The team that comprises vets and technicians also destroyed 1,000 kg of chicken feeds stored in the farm.
]
The outbreak is the fourth in the last one-and-a-half months in the district, said the Directorate of the Animal Health (DoAH).

“Of the 4,000 chickens in the farm, the rapid response team has culled 2, 610,” said Dr Narayan Prasad Ghimire, senior veterinarian at DoAH, adding, “The remaining chickens died of infection.”

The Central veterinary Laboratory under DoAH confirmed on Friday that the chickens had contracted the virus. Following the confirmation, the district co-ordination committee led by Chief District Officer (CDO) Chudamani Sharma had taken the decision to cull the infected chickens. “We have responded on time,” he added.

A surveillance team had brought the samples on Friday morning for the analysis. Tandukar had informed the veterinary officials after scores of chickens started to die in his farm.

Dr Ghimire said that the risk of H5N1 virus spread is high during winter and hence the need for extra precaution. The directorate has urged all poultry farmers to take good care of the fowls. Fowls avoiding feed, standing still with head down and excreting saliva could be symptoms of H5N1 virus infection, said Ghimire.

DoAH said that the team has also completed first phase of disinfection at the farm. It has also urged poultry farmers to immediately inform vet officials if chickens started to die. DoAH, Kathmandu said it has intensified surveillance.

Earlier in December last year, the disease was confirmed in a poultry farm at Ramkot and Sitapaila VDCs of the district. The virus was detected in poultry farms in Dhading and Nuwakot, the adjoining districts of Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, DoAH has said that people can consume chicken and eggs without any hesitation, as all the infected chickens have been culled. The office has also appealed people to cook the chicken properly before eating.

Mentioned, duck farming system is an open and controlled by the investors, it is quite difficult for officers to coordinate in case of bird flu. Breeders can not make a decision immediately. They should first coordinate with the owners of capital.
Extends to Padang Sago

"There are people Korong Mangor, Nagari Batu Kalang, Padangsago reported their ducks and chickens died suddenly. Nearly 70 per cent owned by the stable ducks one resident dead. Of symptoms before death, is synonymous with the bird flu virus attacks, "said Dahlia.

Unfortunately, the carcasses of ducks and chickens owned by residents in Padang Sago has been removed and partially washed away into the river. Making it difficult for officers to do a test and testing for mamastikan if deaths from bird flu or other illness.
