Woman suspected to have SARS-related bug tests negative

by Claire Huang Jingyi
SINGAPORE - Tests have confirmed that a woman suspected of being infected with a variant of the influenza bug that caused the SARS epidemic in 2002 does not have the infection.

A false tweet was circulated online at about 4pm yesterday telling netizens to stay away from the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) because it has a patient who has the novel coronavirus.

The patient was admitted to the SGH after having travelled from Kuwait to Singapore, with a two-hour transit in Qatar.

While she was initially suspected to be infected with the novel coronavirus, the SGH said laboratory tests have confirmed that she does not have the infection.

The hospital said her illness is linked to the influenza A or H1N1 infection, which is one of the circulating seasonal influenza strains.

It added that the patient has a history of chronic disease and as such, would be at a higher risk  http://www.todayonline.com/Hotnews/EDC121012-0000125/Woman-suspected-to-have-SARS-related-bug-tests-negative

Uganda: Mecca - 900 Ugandan Pilgrims Denied Visas Over Ebola

Over 900 Ugandan Muslims, who had planned to travel to Mecca for pilgrimage, are stranded after Saudi Arabia maintained a ban following the recent outbreak of Ebola.
The intending pilgrims, who should have left on October 10, had booked air tickets and made the necessary legal clearances for travel.
The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council pilgrimage leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Kiirya, said they received information through the Saudi Arabian consulate in Kampala that all Ugandan pilgrims were not cleared due to the Ebola outbreak.
The epidemic broke out in Kibaale district in July but was controlled and the country declared free of the Ebola last month.
Rukia Nakamatte, the public relations officer of the Ministry of Health, said they presented a report that declared Uganda free of Ebola to the Saudi Arabian government. http://allafrica.com/stories/201210121280.html

Tawau monitors live chicken imports amidst bird flu alert

Tawau: The Department of Veterinary Services and Animal Industry (Dovsai) here has asked the authorities to strictly monitor the entry of any kind of poultry such as chickens, birds and ducks from Sg Nyamuk, Indonesia to the district following the bird flu which has swept the province since July.
Dovsai Assistant Director, Dr Lim Khun Hiong, said the entry of such animals should be stopped immediately to avoid any negative implications.

"We are worried that if the entry of animals from Sg Nyamuk is not checked, the epidemic will spread here too," she said.
Lim added that, so far, they have conducted blood tests on species of birds in 34 villages, including farms since July, August and September as a precaution.
"The results of our tests run so far is negative for three months, while the test for October is still in progress," she said.

Meningitis-linked firm sold drugs without requiring prescriptions: emails

BOSTON (Reuters) - The drug-mixing company at the heart of a deadly U.S. meningitis outbreak solicited bulk orders from physicians and failed to require proof of individual patient prescriptions as required under state regulations, emails to a customer show.

Reuters reviewed more than a dozen emails that show the New England Compounding Center, contrary to Massachusetts regulations, sold drugs without requiring physicians to supply individual patient prescriptions. The customer confirmed that NECC supplied the clinic with drugs without patient names or prescriptions.  http://www.courant.com/health/connecticut/sns-rt-us-usa-health-meningitis-pharmacybre89c056-20121013,0,7463415.story?

CDC reports 185 cases of fungal meningitis in outbreak

CDC
CDC officials, including Dr. John Jernigan, center, discuss the ongoing outbreak of fungal meningitis in the U.S.
A few more people have been diagnosed with a rare form of fungal meningitis linked to contaminated back pain injections, federal health officials said Friday.
A case was reported in Texas, bringing the total number of patients diagnosed to 185, with 14 deaths, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Overall, patients have been diagnosed in 12 states.
The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration are working to confirm the source of the contamination, which is traced to three lots of steroid injections made at a Framingham, Massachusetts pharmacy. All of the drugs made at the pharmacy, the New England Compounding Center, have been recalled.
The CDC suggests more cases will turn up. The two molds that have been found in patients grow slowly and can cause very subtle symptoms, at least at first.   http://vitals.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/12/14397656-cdc-reports-185-cases-of-fungal-meningitis-in-outbreak?lite

CDC: Tests may not detect meningitis fungus

Cases rise to 170 in 11 states
UPDATED 5:22 PM EDT Oct 11, 2012

(CNN) —
Patients whose fungal tests are negative may still be at risk in a meningitis outbreak, as the fungus involved can be difficult to detect, federal health officials said Thursday.
Cases of the non-contagious fungal meningitis rose to 170 in 11 states as of Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Fourteen people have died.

The cases have been linked to injections of contaminated steroid injection made by the Massachusetts-based New England Compounding Center.

Some 14,000 people may have received the injections, the CDC said Thursday, an increase from its previous estimate of 13,000.

Health officials have been able to contact more than 90% of the patients to warn them, officials said.

But "we aren't out of the woods yet," said Dr. J. Todd Weber, incident manager of the multistate outbreak for the CDC.

While the investigation is ongoing, 50 vials of the injection have tested positive for fungus. Those vials were found in the NECC facility, as well as in clinics that received the medication.

CDC's fungal disease laboratory has found the fungus Exserohilum in 10 meningitis patients, and the fungus Aspergillus in one patient.

Exserohilum is new territory for health officials, as it's not typically seen, Weber told reporters Thursday.

However, it can be difficult to find, meaning a patient whose fungal test is negative is not in the clear. Doctors are encouraged to be diligent in following up with patients, he said.

In addition, symptoms from Exserohilum can take a long time to develop. Patients who received the injections should remain vigilant for "at least several months after injection," Weber said.
The average period in which infections are seen is about two weeks, with the longest being 42 days, officials said. However, the longest period a patient may go before developing the disease is not known.

Curing the infection requires a long course of treatment. The CDC is recommending two anti-fungal drugs, which are very strong and can be difficult for patients to tolerate, Weber said.

Deaths rise to 12 in rare meningitis outbreak
At least 119 sickened

Florida recorded its first death connected to the outbreak of a rare, noncontagious form of meningitis, raising the toll Tuesday to a total of 12 fatalities nationwide.
Earlier in the day, federal authorities reported 11 deaths and 119 persons becoming ill in the outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday. Those figures were an increase from Monday's count of eight deaths and 105 illnesses.

Florida health officials also reported a total of six cases connected to the outbreak -- all in Marion County.

That figure -- one more than federal officials have so far counted in Florida -- means that a total of 120 persons nationwide have become ill, according to state officials.

The outbreak is linked to contaminated steroid injections, and as many as 13,000 people may have received the medicine between May 21 and September 24, the CDC said.

The death of a 70-year-old Florida man occurred in July, prior to the discovery of the contamination, the state's health department said.

INDIA-Uncommon flu goes viral in city

PRITHA CHATTERJEE

Posted: Tuesday, Oct 09, 2012 at 0043 hrs ISTNew Delhi: Doctors grapple with a severe flu-like strain; dengue combines with typhoid to make patients suffer more
The city’s health officials, already grappling with a spurt in dengue and malaria cases over the past few weeks, have a stupefying problem on hand as the common viral flu has taken a rather aggressive form.
The spectrum of virals and similar infections this season have become a reason to worry as hospitals have reported that patients afflicted with the illnesses were showing severe symptoms and longer recovery period.
“The old adage that any fever beyond 4-6 days is usually not a viral has taken a beating. We have now begun to question that theory, considering the disease profile of the patients we are getting,” Dr S Chatterjee, senior consultant in Apollo Hospital’s internal medicine department, said.
The recovery time, doctors said, has gone up to 10 to 12 days and the symptoms also varied.

“We have a range of symptoms from fever and persistent joint pain to symptoms resembling encephalitis, meningitis and hepatitis. We are calling them viral-like diseases because most are showing negative test results for all identified viruses. Even the atypical pathogen profile, a test that diagnoses virals like influenza and H1N1 outside the spectrum of dengue, chikungunya and viral hepatitis, is not showing positive results,” Dr Vikas Ahluwalia of Max Hospital, Saket, said.
In such a situation, doctors put these diseases in the broad category of “viral-like symptoms” - meaning the bug cannot be properly identified.
The symptoms are severe because of the longer recovery period. Doctors said patients, particularly the elderly and diabetics, are showing symptoms characteristic of the H1N1 virus such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), in which the lungs get inflamed.
Dr Atul Gogia of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said: “The viruses mutate over time and these are becoming
resistant to anti-virals just like the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. We have patients on ventilator support and have seen deaths from the flu-like symptoms. These patients had tested negative for all notifiable viral diseases such as dengue and malaria.”

Dr Ahluwalia of Max Hospital agreed. Many patients suffering from common viral-like diseases required ventilator support, he said.
“We have seen patients with all kinds of fevers... delirious with fever, aggressive rashes on the body or simply severe, prolonged joint pains characteristic of chikungunya, when the patient has actually tested negative for the bug,” he said.
This has led to a higher number of patients with low or dropping blood platelet counts.
Dr Gogia said there have been cases of two rare viruses, which cause haemoglobin levels to drop. “We have seen cases of the parvovirus, commonly known as parvo, where the haemoglobin level drops drastically. This is usually seen in patients,

Typhoid vaccine failure warning

TyphoidTyphoid fever is uncommon in England, with an estimated 350 cases occurring each year
More than 700,000 people recently immunised against typhoid may not have full protection because of a dud vaccine that has now been recalled, say experts.
Manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur MSD has recalled 88% of its stock - 16 batches - of Typhim Vi vaccine because tests found some samples were too weak.
Anyone immunised with the vaccine since January 2011 could be affected.

Meanwhile, the Department of Animal Health said that the new H5N1 virus appears, but still belongs to the old branch, but there are differences compared to the pathogenic virus in the U.S. in 2011. According to Prof. Dr. Long Thanh, Director of Veterinary Diagnostic Center central, new strains appeared in July but has spread at breakneck speed from the North Central Region. "This group of viruses can features make bird flu continues to spread in the future is very high and this virus highly lethal than the old strain. It is worrying that this new virus has appeared and spread rapidly in China since the beginning of the year and we are using the vaccine does not work against them, "he said. ...

SARS back as coronavirus; DOH urges people to limit handshakes, touching

8:03 am | Tuesday, October 9th, 2012

MANILA, Philippines—Almost a decade after the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) spread globally, the virus “resurfaced” as “coronavirus,” the Department of Health (DOH) said on Monday.
Dr. Eric Tayag, Department of Health (DOH) spokesperson, said the World Health Organization reported three cases of the respiratory illness. Two people from Saudi Arabia are confirmed dead and a Qatari man is still being monitored.
The SARS-like virus has not yet reached the country but the health department assistant secretary said the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia might cause the influx of people from Saudi Arabia, the origin of the disease.
“No travel restrictions to Saudi Arabia yet,” Tayag said but added that DOH has already coordinated with the Bureau of Immigration.
The virus could be transferred if an inflicted person sneezed within three feet, he explained. “The coronavirus has no cure yet and little is known about it,” he added.
To avoid the SARS-like disease, Tayag advised: “Wash your hands, limit handshakes and touching other people.

Ninth person reported killed in meningitis outbreak

 October 8, 2012, 11:44 PM

As many as 13,000 people received steroid shots suspected in a U.S. meningitis outbreak, health officials said Monday. But it's not clear how many are in danger.

Officials don't how many of the shots may have been contaminated with meningitis-causing fungus tied to the outbreak. And the figure includes not only those who got them in the back for pain - who are most at risk - but also those who got the shots in other places, like knees and shoulders.

Those injected in joints are not believed to be at risk for fungal meningitis, said Curtis Allen, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He said there was no breakdown available of how many had the shots in the back or in joints...  http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57528389/ninth-person-reported-killed-in-meningitis-outbreak/
