A premature baby born "in the isolation center Isiro (main focus of the epidemic) a mother infected with Ebola virus was still alive while his mother died on Saturday," the source said.
In the DRC, which has experienced eight episodes of Ebola, it was the first time that a pregnant woman infected with the virus gave birth, because "Ebola and pregnancy are almost incompatible," stressed after birth, the Minister of Health, Dr. Felix Kabange Numbi.
According to the WHO, 23 health workers were among those infected, five died and 215 people who had contact with patients are under surveillance. She noted that the most recent case of Ebola was confirmed back to Friday.
The status of an epidemic was declared in mid-August in Eastern Province (northeast), but the International Committee of fight against Ebola conducted a retrospective research dating back to May. Balance at September 13: 31 deaths, 9 laboratory confirmed as due to Ebola.
The Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Center for Disease Control (CDC-Atlanta) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) are working closely to fight against the disease.

Taos lecture focuses on microscopic terrors

am, Sun Sep 16, 2012.
To concoct believable fiction, disaster novelist Wil Mara finds experts who possess real world knowledge of hard science, which, mixed with his imagination, can add up to some frightening scenarios. In his latest book, “Gemini Virus,” Mara consulted with virologist and Taos resident Dr. Martinez (Marty) J. Hewlett on a story about the outbreak of a deadly disease and its consequences.
Both Hewlett and Mara will address public health concerns while also separating fact from fiction related to pandemic viruses, during a talk they are planning as part of the Taos Fall Lecture Series.
Their presentation will take place Wednesday (Sept. 19), 6:30 p.m., at the Taos Community Auditorium, 145 Paseo del Pueblo Norte. Admission is free and the public is invited.
The series is presented jointly by the University of New Mexico-Taos and Southern Methodist University-in-Taos.
The plot of “The Gemini Virus” follows an extremely contagious virus that kills within four days. In an interview, Mara confirmed that “all of the diseases and their symptoms mentioned in the book were culled from real diseases. That said, some of the more horrific that I used as models include HIV-AIDS (in advanced forms), smallpox, ebola, Hong Kong flu, and Lassa Fever.”
As advanced as our public health defenses have become, Mara says we don’t necessarily have the means to curtail the effects of a p...

Mexican Bird Flu Outbreak Cost Industry 8615 Million Pesos
-----------------------------------------------------------
Mexico - Latest analysis from the Mexican Poultry Association (UNA) says that damage to the poultry industry from the recent bird flu outbreak has cost over 8615 million pesos - around US$860 million. Over 22.3 million birds have been officially slaughtered and 7,688 jobs lost.

President of UNA, Crivelli Jaime Espinoza said that the cost to the industry came from decreased egg production, a fall in income and subsequently a loss in jobs. The study was conducted on behalf of UNA by the Associate Economics Group and is entitled: Ecomonic and Production Impacts of Avian Influenza in Los Altos in Jalisco. The outbreak not only affected the poultry industry, but also the whole country, as egg prices rocketed.

Mr Espinoza said the industry must now work together with the authorities, as was done during the outbreak, to compensate as soon as possible those who have suffered. The Mexican poultry industry is working hard to keep egg production up to guarantee supply, and beginning to repopulate flocks. Mr Espinoza has said that the government's support is crucial in helping the Mexican poultry industry recover to previous production levels.

Mexico Continues to Kill Birds Hoping to Curtail Spread of Flu
--------------------------------------------------------------
Mexico's poultry farmers slaughtered 22.3 million birds between June and August to contain an outbreak of avian flu, and they immunized 140 million other birds [poultry], the National Food Health, Safety and Quality Service, or Senasica, said.

The final tally of birds destroyed to prevent the spread of the AH7N3 avian influenza virus has been completed, the Senasica said. The avian flu outbreak started in June [2012] at poultry farms in the Los Altos region of the western state of Jalisco. No new avian flu cases have been reported in the past 3 weeks and affected farms are being restocked with "flocks of between 4.5-5 million birds each month," Senasica director Enrique Sanchez said.

The restocking of farms is expected to boost egg production to an average of 2700 tons daily, with output rising gradually as new hens are added, Sanchez said. Bird populations should be back to the pre-emergency level by November [2012], the Senasica director said.

A total of 22.3 million birds were destroyed between 19 June and 31 Aug 2012 of which 10.9 million were certified for slaughter by Senasica, while the rest were killed before health officials were notified of the flu outbreak, Sanchez said. "Some others were eliminated in a preventive manner by poultry farmers near where the outbreak started to prevent infections on their farms', the Senasica director said. The largest losses of birds occurred at farms in the city of Tepatitlan, with 13.6 million, and in San Juan de los Lagos, where 8.3 million birds were lost," Sanchez said.

The measures taken to control the spread of AH7N3 helped prevent larger losses and irreparable damage to Mexico's poultry industry, the Senasica director said. Health officials are now working to restock the poultry farms affected by the outbreak, as well as to restore supplies of poultry products on the market. A total of 12 343 health certificates have been issued so far to help speed the flow of poultry products to consumers.

The government also authorized the importation of 2000 tons of eggs from the USA and is working to import eggs from Costa Rica, Chile and Colombia. The avian influenza epidemic produced total losses of some $350 million, officials said recently.

The AH7N3 avian influenza virus does not pose a danger to people consuming [poultry] meat or eggs. Mexico, according to National Poultry Producers Association figures, produces nearly 2.5 million tons of eggs and 1.2 million tons of meat annually.

Note: More details on this outbreak and the response to it are available in the August issue of EMPRES Watch (see: http://www.fao.org/docrep/016/an395e/an395e.pdf).

Ebola toll rises, health system on its knees

Ebola toll rises, health system on its knees

Since the start of the month the death toll of the Ebola outbreak in the north-east has climbed from 15 to 31, the World Health Organization (WHO) said, defining the situation “serious”. Fadela Chaib, a spokeswoman for the Geneva-based agency, stressed that “it is unusual that the first person to be infected was a health worker”. The areas affected by the outbreak are Isiro and Viadana (70km apart), in the Eastern Province (north-east).
“It was said that the epidemic has reached its maximum peak, but that the people must remain vigilant since the declining phase hasn’t begun yet and the virus cannot be considered under control. The infected were brought to the General Hospital of Isiro, and from fear residents are avoiding the area”, said local MISNA missionary sources.
There is no specific treatment for Ebola, a virus that appeared the first time in 1976 in Zaire at the time and cyclically reappears in various Central African nations, including Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania. The most deadly outbreak was in 2000 that left 225 dead. Ebola, which causes a hemorrhagic fever and has a death rate of up to 90%, is transmitted through direct contact with infected people, in particular at funerals.
The WHO and UN have launched an international appeal for $2-million “to join in the fight against this epidemic, which if not controlled quickly, is a public health emergency that can quickly be global”, said Dr. Léodegal Bazira, WHO representative in the DR-Congo. Funds should help “the government to organize this struggle to provide means to fight this. It is a struggle that many countries, not only the DR-Congo cannot undertake alone”, he added.
“Congo’s health sector has for decades been left to its own demise, with the result of an increasing critical degradation. There is a lack of political will, incapacity of the State and lack of funds that have led to a two track health system”, denounces a civil society source of the Eastern Province. “Because current, today’s problem is Ebola, but how many people have died in silence from cholera, malaria, malnutrition and diarrhea, all easily treatable”, added the source, who prefers to remain anonymous.
There is a lack of health facilities in the former Belgian colony, especially in the small towns and remote villages, but also medical supplies, drugs and doctors. The private structures and those run by the church work better, but often at prohibitive costs for the majority of the people.
“There is wide corruption in the sector: given to the high demand and low offer, there are those who speculate on health. Then there are the few lucky enough to have health insurance and seek treatment abroad”, explained the Congolese activist. A difficult situation that is rendered more critical by insecurity or armed conflicts. “The multiple conflicts in the East, with thousands of displaced seeking refuge in neighbouring countries, complicate the situation of the health sector further and render humanitarian interventions more complicated”, stressed workers of the MSF (Doctors Without Borders). “Those who manage to reach a refugee camp and receive treatment from the WHO, Red Cross or MSF are lucky: the medical assistance is significantly better than that in the villages they fled from”, concluded a missionary source from Isiro.  http://reliefweb.int/report/democratic-republic-congo/ebola-toll-rises-health-system-its-knees

Hantavirus in Yosemite: Ninth case reported in another visitor

September 13, 2012
Another person was sickened by hantavirus traced to Yosemite National Park, the latest in an outbreak that has grown to nine cases and has killed three visitors since mid-June.

The latest case, which sickened a California resident, is believed to have originated in one of Curry Village's signature tent cabins in early July, park spokesman Scott Gediman said. A total of eight cases have been linked to the insulated signature tent cabins; the other to the High Sierra Loop that connects Yosemite Valley with Tuolumne Meadows and other areas.

But the latest case differs from the others in that it was considered a “hantavirus infection,” officials said. Although very rare, some hantavirus cases don't show the respiratory symptoms found in hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, according to the California Department of Public Health.

The eight other cases tied to Yosemite developed into the full-fledged hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

The person with the hantavirus infection has since recovered, Gediman said. The park received confirmation of the case Thursday morning.

Hantavirus in Yosemite: 230,000 more visitors notified

September 13, 2012

Yosemite National Park has again broadened its outreach regarding a recent outbreak of hantavirus, sending notifications to an additional 230,000 people who stayed at the park since early June.

Park officials have already sent thousands of letters to those who stayed overnight in the "signature tent cabins" of Curry Village and lodging in the High Sierra Loop, where eight cases of hantavirus have been traced since mid-June. Three of those cases were fatal.

The new letter, which some recent visitors received via email Wednesday, was sent "because we have heard from concerned guests" who stayed elsewhere, according to a Yosemite statement.

"As you may be aware, Yosemite has been in the news recently related to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome," the letter begins. "Your recent overnight visit to Yosemite did not include a stay in lodging where the known hantavirus infections might have occur..  http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/09/hantavirus-yosemite-230000-more-visitors-notified.html

Ebola Pandemic in Congo

Submitted by Annabel Tautou on Fri, 09/14/201
seems that the authorities concerned are unable to put a control on an Ebola outbreak, which has been prevailing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite making efforts, the death toll has reached to 31.
The World Health Organization has raised concerns about the same. Tarik Jasarevic, who is the spokesperson of the World Health Organization, affirmed that significant rise in the number of Ebola cases is due to the reason that a lot many people have been originally infected.
He has warned that there are probable chances that a lot more cases of the deadly virus will come forth. Therefore, Jasarevic has urged people that they should take all the preventive measures. If they feel any of the symptoms then they should visit GP.
There are chances that the condition can go out of control, but only when if no step is taken to curb the outbreak. However, on the other hand, the authorities concerned were of the view that they have been taking all the possible measures to control the increasing number.
It was in August when the outbreak started and till date the number of cases has been increasing. Experts said that 90% people have no chance of survival.  http://frenchtribune.com/teneur/1213374-ebola-pandemic-congo

A Few Reasons to Fear Congo's Ebola Outbreak

A Few Reasons to Fear Congo's Ebola Outbreak

Posted by Adam_Clark_Estes on Friday, Sep 14, 2012

The Democratic Republic of Congo is struggling to contain an outbreak of Ebola in two remote villages near the border of South Sudan. By the latest count, the epidemic has killed 31 people, including five health workers. The death toll is now twice what it was just a week ago, and the World Health Organization suspects that about 65 more people are infected. Another 108 are being kept under surveillance. Authorities believe that the outbreak started with a batch of tainted bush meat, but now that it’s out, the fierce, rapidly lethal filoviral disease is tearing through villages at an alarming rate.
Should you be scared? Well, that depends on how much of a hypochondriac you are. But just to be safe, here are some things you should know that might completely terrify you.
Just touching someone with Ebola will turn your body into a bloody ruin. With a mortality rate as high as 90 percent, the Ebola virus is one of the deadliest mankind has ever seen. Part of the reason it’s so dangerous is that it’s so infectious and contagious, especially in poor, isolated areas like northeast Congo. The disease is easily spread by contact with body fluids from infected humans or animals. Even a handshake with an infected person could transmit the disease. In this latest outbreak, the situation is made worse by local customs that require bodies of the deceased to be washed by hand and put on display in order to show love and respect for the dead. Unfortunately, this just puts more people in danger of contracting the virus, since even the bodies of victims are contagious. There is no cure.
Ebola’s symptoms are utterly horrifying, starting with the hiccups. This is a disease of Biblical proportions. Since it has a fairly long incubation period, victims can be carrying the virus for nearly a month before symptoms start to appear, and even then it’s not necessarily cause for alarm. At first, it looks a lot like the flu — fever with chills, sore muscles, cough, headaches, fatigue. One of the most telltale signs that Ebola is about to eat your insides:hiccuping. Then it gets worse. Nausea turns into abdominal pain then vomiting and diarrhea, both of which spread the disease further. The next stage of the disease brings disfiguring symptoms like rashes, purple spots caused by hemorrhaging capillaries and bleeding under the skin that causes widespread bruising. In about half of the cases, this leads to unstoppable bleeding from the mucous membranes. That means blood pouring out of the nose, eyes, gums and genitals. In the final stages of Ebola, the body’s organs simply shut down.

Ebola is difficult to contain. Because it often pops up in poverty stricken villages with little or no health care, after hunters have come into contact with sick primates, the virus often spreads unchecked until international health workers can swoop in and quarantine the infected individuals. But it doesn’t take much for things to get out of hand. “The epidemic is not under control. On the contrary the situation is very, very serious,” Eugene Kabambi, aWHO spokesman told Reuters. “If nothing is done now, the disease will reach other places, and even major towns will be threatened.” Fortunately for over-privileged Westerners, Ebola has yet to spread beyond Africa’s shores, but all it would take is a slight mutation to make the disease more mobile. That, or some infected individual hopping on a flight to JFK.
Hollywood already has you on edge. You know those movies starring some unknowing rhesus monkey, Dustin Hoffman in a hazmat suit, Matt Damon shouting at the phone, and lots of bleeding dead people? Those movies aren’t about exactly Ebola. But they may as well be.
Ebola can be weaponized. Naturally terrorists would be interested in using something so deadly, untreatable and terrifying. Aum Shinrikyo, the sick Japanese cult that carried out a chemical attack on Tokyo’s subway in 1995, have been trying to get their hands on samples of Ebola for years. They even sent a group on a fact-finding mission to Congo back in 1993 but, thankfully, failed to collect a sample of the virus.
But you can survive Ebola. After suffering sudden pains and being bedridden for two months, this Ugandan nurse survived an outbreak of Ebola in Bundibugyo District in 2007. His plan for when Ebola returns – as it has in other parts of Uganda this summer: “I would run.”  http://motherboard.vice.com/2012/9/14/things-that-you-should-know-about-ebola

Ground floor: a 29 year old woman suffering from Ebola birth

A world first. Since the emergence of Ebola in 1976, no patient was able to deliver. A 29 year old Congolese, reaching the epidemic has put the world in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Thursday, September 13 at Isiro hospital, the hospital staff did not know how to do it, for fear of being contaminated. Finally, "the staff has been guided by two eminent practitioners by telephone from Kinshasa, Professor and Doctor Mbungu Massamba, along with the Minister of Health, Dr. Felix Kabange Numbi," says RFI . Finally, the delivery went well and the baby is safe and sound, although his prognosis remains reserved.  http://www.afrik.com/breve44605.html

Since May 2012, Ebola: 31 deaths in 69 cases

Friday, September 14, 2012
Officially, it was on August 17 that the Minister of Public Health Dr. Felix Kabange Numbi said the outbreak of Ebola haemorrhagic fever in the Eastern Province, specifically in the area of health Isiro.
But it appears that after compilation of this disease is rampant in this province since last May. To date, taking into account the data compiled, Dr. Felix Kabange indicates that 69 cases were reported including 31 deaths. "After compilation and analysis of retrospective and prospective data to date, the International Committee of technical and scientific coordination control believes that the epidemic had started in May 2012 and 69 cases have been recorded including health staff" says Dr. Felix Kabange adding that more than half of these cases occurred before the official declaration of the epidemic and other cases are detected prospectively thereafter.
Currently, five patients in isolation of one confirmed case. Regarding the total number of contacts, 508 contacts were recorded of which 159 are being followed and 349 are out. The case dates back to isolation admitted Tuesday, September 11.
However, as it is an epidemic that continues to plague this part of the country, Dr Felix Kabange states that data may change from day to day.
Regarding the epicenter of the disease, the health zone Isiro remains the main focus and area health Viadana home school.
