Hajj has become a center for the spread of "Corona"

Report reveals: Hajj has become a center for the spread of "Corona" There is no clear plan to deal with it

Ramallah - minimum home
In the first investigation to news agency "Associated Press" virus "Corona" and the possibility of spread of the disease through the Hajj, and appeared in the international media, criticized the agency twice the health authorities and the lack of clear plans to deal with the virus in the pilgrimage season, citing the absence of posters warning about the virus at airports, especially Jeddah International Airport, in the Grand Mosque in Mecca, and criticized the lack of any information guidelines or programs warn of disease in public places in Mecca and in the courtyards of the Haram, and was amazed at the lack of any guidance or signals about the disease in my Ministry of Hajj, the Saudi Ministry of Health, and are concerned to serve the pilgrims.

It also shed light on the agency of health facilities in Mecca, and its inability to respond to the deadly virus in the pilgrimage season.

The agency said: "The officials in Saudi Arabia, raising alarm that Saudi Arabia is not doing enough to prevent Mecca from becoming a location and a way to export respiratory virus killer among millions of Muslims from around the world who gathered in the city to perform the pilgrimage."

The report added: Saudi Arabia is struggling to contain the escalation of injuries from pneumonia, the Middle East or "Merz," where the country has seen most of the injuries in all parts of the world so far, more than 500 injured since 2012, and during the past few weeks has accelerated numbers with many of the deaths reported it almost every day, and new infections are often in the double digits.

The report went on: yet Mecca, near the Red Sea coast, the west, has seen fewer cases than other areas in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and since the discovery of the first case of the virus, "Corona" in 2012, there was a Mossman of the annual pilgrimage to the city, and there are no cases injury among the pilgrims, where some of the cases that have emerged out of Saudi Arabia, including two in the United States, foreigners returning home from work in the Kingdom of Saudi travelers or abroad. "

The rising number of cases in the UK, what is worrying is the lack of adequate precautions taken in Mecca, which is a hot spot and clear potential for the spread of the disease, according to the report.

Experts say: You need the Saudi Ministry of Health to be moving faster to create more public awareness, promote testing and analysis are more stringent in hospitals and take precautions best among the medical staff, who make up a large proportion of those infected because of unsanitary conditions in health facilities.

The report added: Makkah is witnessing a constant flow of pilgrims throughout the year from all over the world, and their numbers swell during the holy month of Ramadan, which begins in late June

The pilgrimage season - which Islam affirms that it is the duty of all Muslims who are able to perform once in their lives, it brings the crowds more than the magnitude of about two million pilgrims from all over the world, and gather in tight places; they visit to the Kaaba the holiest site in Islam, and other sites around Mecca, where the visit will last about five days and will begin the pilgrimage this year in early October

The report pointed out that most of the pilgrims international arrivals to Mecca come across the nearest international airport in the coastal city of Jeddah, which has seen the largest number of cases, however there are no posters in the airport or the Grand Mosque warns of virus or give visitors information about how to prevent its spread , and that was evident during the recent visit by a reporter, "The Associated Press" through the airport in Jeddah, in the Grand Mosque where roams the pilgrims.

The report added: website of the Ministry of Hajj, which is visited by many pilgrims international For information, does not mention the virus, or the urge to work special precautions, and the website of the Ministry of Health advised people over 65 years old, and children under the age of 12 who are suffering from the postponement of their pilgrimage.

He added the report: Since the beginning of April, saw the Mecca 21 new confirmed case, including the status of one of the pilgrims Turks, and four deaths during the same time period, where there were 114 new cases in Jeddah and 23 deaths, and saw Asia's first case of death due to virus Last month, when a man from Malaysia trip pilgrimage to Mecca and Jeddah from across where he returned in March, and found that he had wounded infected.

The report also pointed out that King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, has replaced the health minister, last month, in a sign of dissatisfaction with efforts to curb the spread of the virus, and visited the new minister Adel Faqih, health workers in Jeddah, and said to them: "The virus is spread among working in the medical field; because hospitals do not take measures in the fight against infection. "

According to Ismail Mohammed, a director of the hospital in Mecca: has been equipped medical facility and the only one in the city of Mecca, King Abdullah Medical to deal with cases infected with the virus.

He said Ismail Mohammed, told the agency: "The Mecca almost free from the virus, but warned that steps should be taken to ensure that it remains so, and the policy of the government to a large extent rely solely on the reaction, and there is a need to further educate the patient and there is no So far, no general trend in anti-virus policy toward the pilgrims. "

He explained Adnan bar, who served for years as director of public health in Mecca, it should be updated and the Ministry of Health to become less bureaucratic because the medical infrastructure in Mecca need to be a quick turnaround, and indeed we did not have enough facilities to provide primary health care to pilgrims.

"The bar:" The current health care system in Mecca does not cover half the necessary services, and fortunately the virus is not contagious too, has been observed to spread from person to person only in close contact, such as family members or workers in the field of health care, who are interested persons injured.

In the same context, according to the report, the WHO said on Wednesday that the virus does not constitute yet global health emergency, in all parts of the world and the World Health Organization has assurances from the 572 case at least, including 173 deaths, with the vast majority in the UK Saudi Arabia 0.160 deaths and 514 confirmed cases since 2012, according to government figures.

The virus often begins with flu-like symptoms but can lead to pneumonia and breathing problems and in severe cases, kidney failure and death, and scientists are not sure exactly how people can be infected with the disease but suspect link with the disease camels.

She sharihan Mufti, need Egyptian She is 61 years old wore a mask surgically blue They roam around the Grand Mosque, which houses the Kaaba, where the visit, her first to Mecca, and she wanted to be cautious, but says the opportunity to pray in the courtyard of the Kaaba dispel any fears about the virus , and she wondered: "Is there anything more beautiful after this? hope to come every year."

Silently among us: Scientists worry about milder cases of MERS

(Reuters) - Scientists leading the fight against Middle East Respiratory Syndrome say the next critical front will be understanding how the virus behaves in people with milder infections, who may be spreading the illness without being aware they have it.
Establishing that may be critical to stopping the spread of MERS, which emerged in the Middle East in 2012 and has so far infected more than 500 patients in Saudi Arabia alone. It kills about 30 percent of those who are infected.
It is becoming increasingly clear that people can be infected with MERS without developing severe respiratory disease, said Dr David Swerdlow, who heads the MERS response team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"You don't have to be in the intensive care unit with pneumonia to have a case of MERS," Swerdlow told Reuters. "We assume they are less infectious (to others), but we don't know."
The CDC has a team in Saudi Arabia studying whether such mild cases are still capable of spreading the virus. Swerdlow is overseeing their work from Atlanta.
They plan to test the family members of people with mild MERS, even if these relatives don't have any symptoms, to help determine whether the virus can spread within a household.
Cases of the disease, which causes coughing, fever and sometimes fatal pneumonia, have nearly tripled in the past month and a half, and the virus is moving out of the Arabian peninsula as infected individuals travel from the region.
Since late April, the first two cases of MERS have been reported on U.S. soil. Dutch officials reported their first two cases this week. Infections have also turned up in Britain, Greece, France, Italy, Malaysia and elsewhere.
Since MERS is an entirely new virus, there are no drugs to treat it and no vaccines capable of preventing its spread. It is a close cousin of the virus that caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS, which killed around 800 people worldwide after it first appeared in China in 2002.
Because MERS patients can have "mild and unusual symptoms," the World Health Organization advises healthcare workers to apply standard infection control precautions for all patients, regardless of their diagnosis, at all times.
"Asymptomatic carriers of diseases can represent a major route for a pathogen to spread," said Dr Amesh Adalja of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
"Just think of Typhoid Mary," he said, referring to the asymptomatic cook who spread typhoid fever to dozens of people in the early 20th century.
NOT EVEN A COUGH
Milder symptoms played a role in the second U.S. case of MERS, a man who started having body aches on a journey from Jeddah on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast to the United States.
It took the patient more than a week before he sought help in an emergency department in Orlando, Florida. Once he arrived, he waited nearly 12 hours in the ER before staff recognized a MERS link and placed him in an isolation room. The patient did not have signs of a respiratory infection, not even a cough.[ID:nL1N0O002W]
Dr Kevin Sherin, director of the Florida Department of Health for Orange County, believes that made it less likely that he could spread the infection. Hospital workers have tested negative, but the health department and the CDC are still checking on hundreds of people who might have been in contact with the patient.
A CDC study published earlier this week looked at some of the first cases of MERS that occurred in Jordan in 2012.
Initially, only two people in that outbreak were thought to have MERS. When CDC disease detectives used more sensitive tests that looked for MERS antibodies among hospital workers, they found another seven people had contracted MERS and survived it.
That suggests there may be people with mild cases "that can serve as a way for the virus to spread to other individuals, which makes it a lot harder to control," Adalja said.
Scientists are especially concerned because a lot of recent cases of MERS are among people who did not have contact with animals such as camels or bats that are believed to be reservoirs for the virus.
"If they don't have animal contact, where do they pick it up? Potentially, asymptomatic cases," said Dr Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert from the University of Minnesota.  http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/16/us-health-mers-research-idUSKBN0DW1LT20140516

World Health Organization: MERS Isn't an Emergency

After a meeting of the World Health Organization's expert group on the Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS, it was decided that the virus is not a global health emergency. Some scientists said while MERS technically meets the criteria for a global health emergency, declaring it as such could confuse the public...
..."Calling a global emergency in a world which has a lot of urgent issues going on is a major act," said Dr. Keiji Fukuda, an assistant director-general of WHO, told reporters Wednesday. "You have to have really solid information to say this is a global emergency."
Fukuda said there wasn't yet proof of the virus' sustained transmission among people...
..Some scientists said while MERS technically meets the criteria for a global health emergency, declaring it as such could confuse the public.
"People might think (WHO) is crying wolf because MERS is still primarily a problem in the Middle East," said Michael Osterholm, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Minnesota who has worked in the Middle East. "But if one of those infected people gets on a plane and lands in London, Toronto, New York or Hong Kong and transmits to another 30 people, everyone will have a different view."
On Wednesday, the Netherlands' National Institute for Public Health and the Environment announced its first case of MERS, a man who became infected during a visit to Saudi Arabia. He is now in isolation at a hospital in The Hague...

Saudis question Makkah preparedness as Mers spreads

Makkah, Saudi Arabia: Officials in Saudi Arabia are raising alarm that the kingdom is not doing enough to prevent Makkah from becoming a route for exporting an often deadly respiratory virus as millions of Muslims from around the world converge on the city to perform pilgrimage at Islam’s holiest site.
The calls have taken on greater urgency as Saudi Arabia struggles to contain a surge in infections from the Middle East respiratory syndrome, or Mers.
The country has seen the most infections worldwide by far — more than 500 since 2012 — and in past weeks the numbers have accelerated with several deaths reported nearly every day and new infections often numbering in the double digits.
So far Makkah, near the western Red Sea coast, has seen fewer cases than other parts of Saudi Arabia....
Experts say the Saudi Health Ministry needs to move faster to create more public awareness, promote more aggressive testing in hospitals and take better precautions among medical staff — who have made up a significant proportion of those infected because of improper conditions.
Makkah sees a constant stream of pilgrims throughout the year from around the world, and their numbers swell during Ramadan, which begins in late June.
The Haj pilgrimage — which Islam says is a duty of all able-bodied Muslims to perform once in their lives — brings even more gigantic crowds: More than 2 million pilgrims from all over the world, packed into the close quarters as they visit the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest site, and other locations in and around Makkah for a period of around five days. This year, Haj starts in early October.
Also, most of the international pilgrims travel to Makkah through the closest international airport, in the coastal city of Jeddah, which has seen far more cases.
Notably, no posters warning of the virus or giving visitors information on how to prevent its spread are visible through Jeddah airport or at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, where pilgrims circumambulate the Kaaba.
The Haj Ministry’s website, which many international pilgrims refer to for information, makes no mention of Mers or special precautions.
The Health Ministry’s website, however, advises people over 65, children under 12 and those who are ill to delay their pilgrimage.
“Makkah is a location for people from all over the world with all kinds of problems that could be spread all over,” said Adnan Al Bar, a member of Saudi Arabia’s top consultative body, the Shura Council, at a recent summit in Jeddah on development in the holy city.
Since the beginning of April, Makkah has seen 21 new confirmed cases — including one Turkish pilgrim — and four deaths.
Over the same time period, there have been 114 new infections in Jeddah and 23 deaths. Asia saw its first Mers death last month, when a Malaysian man who went on pilgrimage to Makkah and passed through Jeddah in March returned home and was found to have been infected.
King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz last month replaced the health minister in a sign of displeasure over efforts to control the virus’ spread.
The new minister, Adel Faqih, visited health workers in Jiddah on Wednesday and told them the coronavirus was spreading in part because hospitals are not taking anti-infection measures.
Only one medical facility in Makkah — the King Abdullah Medical City — is equipped to handle Mers cases, according to Esmail Mohammad, the director-general of another hospital in the city, Umm Al Qura.
“Makkah is almost considered to be free” of the virus, he said. But he warned steps have to be taken to ensure it remains so.
Government policies have largely “only been reactive” greater patient education is needed” and there is still no “overall orientation [of anti-Mers policy] toward the pilgrims.”
Preparations, he said, are only on “an ad hoc basis.”
Al Bar, who served for years as Makkah’s general health director, said the Health Ministry should be overhauled to become less bureaucratic and that Makkah’s medical infrastructure needs a rapid transformation. Already, it does not have enough facilities to provide primary care for pilgrims.
“The current health care system in the Makkah does not cover half of the needed services,” he said.
Fortunately, Mers is not highly contagious — person-to-person spread has been seen only in close contacts, like family members or health care workers who care for an infected person.
The World Health Organisation said Wednesday the virus does not yet constitute a global health emergency. Worldwide, WHO has confirmations of at least 572 cases, including 173 deaths. The vast majority has been in Saudi Arabia — 160 dead and 514 confirmed cases since 2012, according to government figures.
Mers often starts with flu-like symptoms but can lead to pneumonia, breathing problems and in severe cases, kidney failure and death. Scientists are unsure exactly how people are catching Mers but suspect the disease is linked to camels.
Pilgrims are largely undaunted.
Sharihan Abdul Mufti, a 61 year-old Egyptian pilgrim, wore a blue surgical mask around the Grand Mosque that houses the Kaaba.
It is her first time to visit Makkah and she wanted to be careful, but she says the chance to pray at the base of the Kaaba supersedes any concerns about the virus.
“Is there anything more beautiful after this?” she said. “I hope to come every year.”  http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/saudi-arabia/saudis-question-makkah-preparedness-as-mers-spreads-1.1333605

 World health meeting over Mers
 May 11, 2014
GENEVA // Government authorities and international health experts are to meet tomorrow to decide whether the deadly Mers coronavirus is a “public health emergency of international concern”.

The World Health Organisation has organised the meeting in Geneva for its experts and representatives of affected countries.
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome has infected at least 536 people and killed 145 since its first known case was discovered in 2012. The WHO’s emergency committee will advise its director general on whether Mers constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, and whether to issue temporary recommendations to prevent the disease from spreading.
International health regulations define such an emergency as an extraordinary event that constitutes a public health risk to other WHO member states through international spread of the disease, and which could require a coordinated international response.
These regulations went into force in 2007. The emergency committee has only been used so far for Mers and H1N1, the 2009 pandemic strain of influenza.
H1N1 is the only disease that the WHO has named a public health risk of international concern. It left more than 18,000 dead from infections in more than 214 countries and territories.
The number of Mers cases has almost doubled in recent months, with by far the most being in Saudi Arabia.
The kingdom has counted 480 laboratory-confirmed cases, with 139 deaths, as of Sunday.
The UAE has had 37 lab-confirmed Mers cases since late March, all in Abu Dhabi emirate, with more than two thirds being healthcare workers. Most of those recently infected had mild or no symptoms.
Despite the recent rise in cases, Mers seems to be contagious only to a limited extent, not passing easily from person to person unless through close contact, the WHO says.
The organisation’s mission to Jeddah found the outbreak there was caused by an increase in the number of primary cases, possibly seasonal, coupled with inadequate infection prevention and control measures.
One explanation for a seasonal increase could be related to the weaning of young camels from their mothers in the spring, the WHO said in its May 9 risk assessment report.
Recent studies have suggested that camels are a proba..

The big meeting on Tuesday, will tell the the world what is most important to you. Doing your job.. or allowing some countries to keep the rest of the world in the dark about MERS. Even casual observers can now see this outbreak is getting way out of hand. The toll is growing by the day, by the hour. Some tracking teams cannot even keep up with the daily case count, as you knowingly try to only count confirmed cases, as whole families come down with similar symptoms but are not tested.

..No travel bans to KSA have been enforced by any country, and travelers from the Kingdom have not faced any problems entering other countries around the world. The World Health Organisation has not recommended any travel restrictions to or from KSA..According to the World Health Organization, there is no epidemic... http://www.arabnews.com/news/569146

18 North Carolina hospital patients potentially exposed to rare brain disease

  • 694940094001_1389249470001_640-brain.jpg
Nearly 20 patients at a North Carolina hospital may have been exposed to a rare and fatal neurological disease while undergoing surgery with surgical equipment that had not been properly sterilized, officials at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center said Monday.
Jeff Lindsay, president of the Winston-Salem hospital, told a news conference that 18 patients may have been exposed to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, an incurable and invariably fatal brain disorder that kills 90 percent of patients within one year.
"While the CDC categorizes such risks as 'very low,' any risk of transmission is simply unacceptable,” Lindsay told reporters. "On behalf of the entire team, I apologize to the patients and their families for this anxiety. We are committed to providing support to patients and their families."
A neurosurgical procedure was done on Jan. 18 on a patient who was later confirmed to have the disease. The other 18 patients, all neurosurgical patients, were exposed to surgical equipment that had been cleaned using a typical sterilization procedures, but not the enhanced sterilization procedures used for Creutzfeldt-Jakob.
Novant vice president for clinical development Dr. Jim Lederer said the operation was performed on a patient that was suspected and later confirmed to have sporadic CJD. While CJD has been associated with mad cow disease, Lederer emphasized this particular strain isn't mad cow.
There's no known cure for CJD, which can lead to death in some cases. It could take years if not decades for other symptoms to show up. The disease causes dementia, impaired vision, involuntary movement and coma, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
"We recognize that the risk to the patients is very small," Lindsay said. "However, we take any potential exposure seriously."
Amanda Morin, who had back surgery at Forsyth Medical Center last month, told Fox8.com she was contacted by a hospital staff member who informed her she is one of 18 patients who may have been exposed to the disease.
“I have a two year old to live for and mommy might not be here,” Morin told the station. “I am angry; very, very angry something so little could cost me my life. I want grandkids. I want to be there for them.”
The state Department of Health and Human Services said it was monitoring the possible exposure in a statement released Monday, Fox8.com reported.
“DHHS officials are aware of the incident at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center and have been in contact with the facility. Our primary concern is the health, safety and welfare of patients, and we will continue to closely monitor the situation” said Kevin Howell, DHHS spokesperson.
About 200 cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are recorded annually in the United States, according to the National Institutes of Health. In fewer than 1 percent of cases, the disease is transmitted by exposure to brain or nervous system tissue, and there have been only four reported cases of transmission via surgical instruments.http://www.foxnews.com/health/2014/02/11/nc-hospital-apologizes-for-exposure-to-disease/

2 H5N1 bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam

Updated: 2014-02-11 15:40
( Xinhua)
HANOI - Central Vietnam's province of Thanh Hoa and central highlands province of Kon Tum have reported bird flu outbreaks in poultry, local media reported Tuesday.
Vietnam's state-run radio Voice of Vietnam (VOV) said on Tuesday that 186 chickens died on February 8 with positive test results of H5N1 bird flu from samples collected in a farm in Tinh Gia district, Vietnam's central Thanh Hoa province.
Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa province have asked the district to cull and safely dispose of all chickens in the infected farm and neighboring families to prevent the disease from spreading.
Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA reported Tuesday that another outbreak of H5N1 bird flu on chicken has been announced in the country's central highlands province of Kon Tum.
About 600 chickens in Kon Tum province showed symptoms of suspected avian flu and 470 died on February 8
Some 130 chickens left have been culled on Tuesday after the official conclusion was reached that they were positive with avian influenza or H5N1 virus.
According to VNA, a chief veterinary was reported to be hospitalized with symptoms of fever, fatigue and loss of appetite after contacting with the above-mentioned outbreak in Kon Tum province.
The patient was now quarantined for follow-up treatment with the suspected H5N1 bird flu on human, said VNA.
Earlier in January 28, another avian bird flu outbreak was reported with nearly 1,000 chickens sick and dead in Kon Tum province, according to VNA.
These outbreaks raise alarm over the spread of H5N1 virus in Vietnam among both local people and international communities.
In a related development, the United States Agency for International Development announced on Tuesday a project worth $800, 000 for preventing bird flu in Vietnam.
The project aims at helping reducing risks to community health caused by bird flu, epidemic and other emerging infectious diseases in Vietnam from now till September, 2015, VNA reported.

Bird flu patient says he ate bloody fried chicken leg before he fell ill

A H7N9 bird flu patient in Zhejiang Province remembered that he had eaten a fried chicken leg with fresh blood on the bone just before falling sick, the local Morning Express reported.
The man, identified as Liu Jintao, 39, was confirmed to have H7N9 bird flu on October 14, the first case reported in Zhejiang last fall. He became critically ill and was able to talk about eating the chicken leg only after he recovered.
Liu recalled he bought three fried chicken legs from a supermarket during the National Day holiday, finding blood on the bones as he ate the second one.
Though he stopped eating the chicken, he said he had diarrhea the next day. He went to the doctor after he did not get better on the fourth day. On October 11, he was transferred to the ICU of Shaoxing People’s Hospital since he was in critical condition.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA-Chairman of Avian Influenza-Zoonosis Research Center (AIRC)-University of Airlangga (Airlangga University), Surabaya, East Java (East Java), Dr CA Nidom worrying cases of bird flu virus (Avian Influenza / AI) in Sragen, Java East. Because the bird flu makes as much 3,455 ducks or duck is dead and feared to be transmitted to the human body.

Nidom says duck death case due to the fact the AI virus that surfaced today is an accumulation of duck deaths started late last January 2014. However, due to the lack of virus treatment, the mortality rate of up to thousands of ducks each tail.
"In fact, cases of bird flu occurred in 2009 and still not dead. Then appeared again a new virus that is now attacking the ducks," said Nidom told Reuters on Sunday (9/2).

The key, he added, the slower the AI virus handling the more complex case. But she was not sure exactly what type of AI virus that attacks the ducks in Sragen, whether old or new virus virus. But he guessed, 3,455 ducks died suddenly in Sragen the result of marriage or a combination of old and new viruses virus AI.

If so, he mentions the handling of the virus is much more complicated because the virus is a combination virus. "I was worried if the AI virus is left and uncontrolled handling can harm humans because it jumped into the human body," he said.

Moreover, the media increasingly widespread transmission of AI virus. If only the old type of AI virus spread through the air, while the new AI virus can be transmitted through air and water. To solve it, said Nidom, there are several steps.http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.republika.co.id%2Fberita%2Fnasional%2Fumum%2F14%2F02%2F10%2Fn0r5d1-waduh-flu-burung-ancam-warga-di-sragen

Experts say the H7N9 bird flu vaccine clinical evaluation needs at least 6 years

At 9:56 on February 10, 2014Source: First Financial Daily
For the newly developed H7N9 avian influenza DNA vaccine , Professor , Shanghai Institute of Emerging Infectious Diseases Xu Jianqing reproduction yesterday told the " First Financial Daily" reporters , clinical evaluation is divided into three phases , at least six years , there are still some risks during the .
Shanghai Institute of Infectious Diseases , Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center has a new hair and reproduce the 7th news release , H7N9 avian influenza DNA vaccine has completed initial development in Shanghai , has now entered clinical trials reporting stage.
Xu Jianqing told the newspaper, the team developed a vaccine using gene technology. The specific method is to try the main immunogen gene H7N9 is implanted into a mature H7 vaccine vector , equivalent to deposit into the safe and then into human cells , the membrane protein structure of the virus will not be destroyed, can effectively stimulate body to produce protective neutralizing antibodies. 30 mice were vaccinated and then infected with H7N9 avian influenza virus , 30 days without a disease.
However, the effectiveness and safety of vaccines should be verified by further clinical evaluation .
" Phase I clinical evaluation is mainly for vaccine safety , the second phase is the safety and immunogenicity , three are immunogenic and protective ."徐建青said that after the completion of Phase III clinical , be possible to enter the market.
Xu Jianqing said the biggest advantage of DNA vaccine is safe , because the gene vaccine using gene universal vaccine carrier , which has been internationally proven through clinical trials to be safe . " The safety of the vaccine itself , in theory there is no problem , specific to our own vaccine , or pre-clinical and clinical going to go verify ."

However, the main risk is genetic vaccine immunogenicity in humans, monkeys and other larger animals seem weak. " Can be complementary techniques to overcome this weakness on clinical , laboratory we are doing another set of fake virus technology can be used as a complementary technology to enhance the immunogenicity of DNA vaccine ."
In addition , H7N9 viruses are constantly variation, "It depends on which part of the variation , we chose the site of the membrane protein , and the work done from the current data, we have a number of vaccines for 1996 , 2003 and 2007 of H7 viruses have a protective effect . " Xu Jianqing said .
For R & D H7N9 avian influenza virus vaccine , a number of companies and organizations inside and outside there are many breakthroughs . For example in Taiwan Guoguang Biotechnology Co., Ltd. developed the H7N9 bird flu vaccine is expected to enter clinical trials in March ; last May , the U.S. Greffex and Protein Science has also announced the adoption of modified adenovirus vectors through research H7N9 virus vaccine candidates ; addition American Novavax, Canada, Medicago, Sinopharm Group, China biotechnology Co., Ltd. , a subsidiary of Beijing Sinovac Sinovac Biotech Ltd. , Hualan companies, and China Taiwan 's Guoguang biotechnology Co., Ltd. also have declared vaccine development stage , none of these companies are currently entering clinical phase.http://fashion.ifeng.com/health/yiyao/chanjing/detail_2014_02/10/33653020_0.shtml

South Korea culls more birds

Two more cases of AI confirmed

2014-02-09 19:49
Two more cases of bird flu were confirmed on Saturday despite quarantine efforts, raising further concerns over the virus spreading, officials said.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, more than 10,000 fowl at two farms, in Yeongam-gun, South Jeolla Province, and Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, were found to have been infected with the highly pathogenic strain of H5N8.

The virus suspicions were reported last Thursday from the two farms after a large number of poultry was found dead.

The quarantine authorities immediately culled more than 150,000 fowl being raised in a 500-meter radius of the concerned sites. Additional culling of more than 100,000 fowl within a 3-kilometer radius is underway, officials said.

As of Sunday afternoon, more than 100 suspected cases have been identified in the country since the first outbreak on Jan. 16, with 51 cases confirmed.

More than 3 million poultry have been slaughtered since then.

Meanwhile, North Korea is also stepping up efforts to defend against the spread of the virus amid concerns over the bird flu, the North Korean media said. According to the North’s state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper on Saturday, the government is taking preventive measures.

“The quarantine department has drafted a meticulous plan to protect the state from infectious diseases such as bird flu,” it said.

“An emergency meeting was held and revolutionary measures are being taken to prevent the virus spreading through raising local government’s responsibility and role.”

Last week, the North’s official Korean Central News Agency also reported that the state is monitoring the movement of migratory birds and conducting tests on farm visitors and poultry as part of efforts to stave off the outbreak.

The media, however, has not confirmed whether avian influenza has broken out in the isolated state.

According to the World Health Organization’s report late last month, the bird flu has not become a threat for North Korea yet.

Observers said the virus’ spread in neighboring countries such as South Korea and China led North Korea to step up its preventive efforts.  http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20140209000255
