H5N3 Bird flu: 1,500 animals killed on organic farm in Stormarn Germany

Bird flu: 1,500 animals killed on organic farm in Stormarn
on 22/12/2012 12:00

Tangstedt / Kiel - Ministry there are clear: The virus is found for people ungefährlich.Auch already sold poultry can be safe to eat.

Bird flu is back in the North. On an organic farm in Tangstedt in Stormarn the authorities were on Thursday night as a precaution kill 500 geese and 1000 hens. The farm was disinfected and disposed of manure around the farm set up a one kilometer-wide exclusion zone. Is now all poultry farmers keep their animals in the stables, the meat can not be sold.
During a routine check on the farm for some geese Tangstedter the H5N3 flu virus was detected. Maybe have a wild goose infected the free-running animals, speculates the CEO. Symptoms they had shown no.
In early 2006 in Schleswig-Holstein dead wild birds were found with the H5N1 flu virus - influenza. At that time, the breeder had in much of the country by bringing their animals in the barn. The H5N1 virus was and is a fire hazard and transferable to humans. IN QUESTION When newly discovered H5N3 virus contrast, there are a relatively harmless variant, a spokeswoman for the Kiel Environmental and Agriculture Ministry stressed immediately. It had to animals only slightly pathogenic effect. For humans there is no danger of contagion was "almost impossible".However: Flu viruses can mutate easily, experts say. From the H5N3-could so probably still a H5N1 virus, are especially when chickens were infected. In order to prevent exactly that Tangstedter animals were slaughtered as a precaution.
Also of the motorcycles sold as Christmas roast goose Tangstedter'm no danger, explains Stormarn district Klau Ploger (SPD). "Everything you have in the freezers, you can eat calms," said the Chief Executive.Even the - not the usual - eating raw meat was safe for expert information. For other animals also there was no danger. "Pets can be petted continue in peace," says Klaus Ploger. The Tangstedter operation offers its customers before the festival, meanwhile, to spare Bratgänse of other organic-farms.
The H5N3 virus has now been demonstrated for the first time in Schleswig-Holstein. In early December veterinarians had already found him in a small poultry farm in Hesse. Last year there was a case in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 2010, some cases in several other states. In addition, the type of virus in mallard ducks in the Czech Republic and wild birds in Georgia has been demonstrated.
In Kiel country house you're worried, despite the clear ministerial, will monitor developments closely. For the FDP calls for their Oliver Kumbartzky deputy environment minister Robert Habeck (Green) on already to inform Parliament fully...

More evidence of nasty flu season ahead

There’s more evidence that this is shaping up to be a nasty flu season, with the number of states with high flu activity doubling in a week and reports of the achy, feverish illness spreading widely across the U.S.

Eight states are now reporting high levels of what’s known as influenza-like illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Eighteen states reported widespread flu activity for the week that ended Dec. 8, according to the agency’s FluView data.
"Today’s report confirms that the U.S. flu season is off to early start,” CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden said in a statement. “It’s too early to tell how severe our season might be. However, we know that thousands die and hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized with flu each year. Vaccination is the single most important step we can take to protect ourselves and our families against infection. It's not too late to ge..

China-Chicken Fed Illegal Drugs Sent to Fast Food Chains

Published on Dec 18, 2012 by
Chicken being fed illegal drugs are being widely distributed around China. Ending up in major fast food chains. That's according to an investigative report by state-run CCTV.

This chicken farm in China's northeast Shandong Province has been supplying chickens to one of the biggest meat distributors in China, the Liuhe Group. The farm owner says he uses a drug that makes the birds grow faster. Other drugs are added to the mix to keep away infection.

Reporter:
"Does the Liuhe Group know you feed chickens with drugs?"

[Mr. Zhang, Chicken Farmer]:
"They have never paid attention to it."

He says the drug makes the animals quickly gain weight. This speeds up the time between birth and slaughter.

[Mr. Zhang, Chicken Farmer]:
"The chickens weighing a little more than half a pound may grow to five and a half pounds within 40 days. The chicken's heart is too small to support the extremely great weight."

He says that because of the rapid weight gain, many of the chickens are often unhealthy and many die prematurely.

These growth stimulation drugs are illegal. But since the law is not enforced and the Liuhe Group does not perform inspections or quarantine, the chickens easily enter mainstream food supply.

The chickens are sold to the largest restaurant supplier Yum, which in turn supplies major food chains like KFC and McDonald.

This is not the first time that Chinese chicken farmers have come under scrutiny. In 2005 China's Ministry of Agriculture was chastised for encouraging chicken farmers to use an avian flu vaccine meant for humans.

The virus became resistant to the drug and thus was not effective when it spread to people. China's Ministry of Agriculture denied the accusations saying it had never approved the drug to be used in birds.

Bird flu confirmed in Dhading's highway town

Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:37
Avian Influenza (bird flu) has been confirmed in Dharke, a highway town in Dhading district. Laboratory examination of suspected chicken samples confirmed bird flu outbreak in the area, officials at the Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL) said.

Samples of dead chickens were examined by the laboratory following death of hundreds of chicken in the area.

A team led by CVL's veterinary experts had safely dumped 700 chicken from a farm on Wednesday and the team will continue active surveillance for some time.

Few days earlier, farmers in Dharke had seized two Indian containers carrying "illegally imported" chicken for the KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) outlet in Kathmandu. The containers were released a couple of days later despite their protest. nepalnews.com

Avian flu virus learns to fly without wings

21 December 2012

  • Potentially fatal bird flu viruses can spread on the wind, a hitherto suspected but unproven route of transmission.
Usually, people catch bird flu through close physical contact with each otheror, much more commonly, with infected poultry.
The newly identified capacity for wind to spread it opens up a potential route by which the viruses can spread between farms.
The finding came about after Dutch researchers studied an outbreak of the avian flu strain H7N7 in poultry on Dutch farms in 2003, which resulted in 89 confirmed human infections including one death.
Computer models showed that wind patterns at the time of the outbreak explain how different genetic variants of H7N7 ended up on different farms (Journal of Infectious Diseasesdoi.org/j3b).
H5N1 is the most harmful strain of avian flu, having killed 360 of 610 infected people since it was discovered in 2003. The fact that a related strain can travel on the wind suggests that H5N1 can too, says Marion Koopmans of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven, who coordinated the research project. "You must assume that this same potential is there for H5N1," she says.
Other researchers agreed that by implication, H5N1 could spread in the same way. "Because we don't know, we should assume the worst case – and the worst case is that H5N1 travels on the wind as well," says John McCauley, a bird flu researcher at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research in London.
He says it's well known that the virus that causes foot and mouth disease in cattle and pigs travels many kilometres on the wind, but it's lighter than avian flu and is produced in huge amounts by infected animals. McCauley says the most likely scenario for bird flu is that the virus hitches a ride on airborne particles from farms, especially particles of infected faeces from poultry farms.  http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn23029-avian-flu-virus-learns-to-fly-without-wings.html

Bird Flu Virus Mutation is Mysterious

Author: Cornelius Eko Susanto Friday, December 21, 2012
AFP / M Risyal Hidayat / rj
JAKARTA - MICOM: Until now the government has yet to determine the origin of the H5N1 virus attacks the sub-variant ( clade ) which caused the death of hundreds of thousands of ducks in Java. Tracking the origin of infection is important, because the ground will be the most accurate in determining management policy. Tracing the beginning of the outbreak in ducks into PR (homework) researcher at the Ministry of Agriculture, "said Secretary Emil Agustiono Komnas Zoonosis when contacted on Friday (21/12) .
As proclaimed earlier, the initial attack by the virus clade occurred only in ducks in Brebes, Central Java, around the beginning of December. Incidentally city located on Java's north coast region is famous as the center of commodity-producing salted eggs. Emil found, epidemiologically disease, tracing the origin of the outbreak can be started from this city. Now there are two possible causes strong H5N1 virus clade 2.1 into clade 2.3.2. possibility first, there has been a local mutation in the H5N1 virus that has been there in the duck's body. As we know, almost all of Indonesia's bird flu is endemic. Ducks itself actually quite carier H5N1 virus, which means that although the virus body, but does not cause onset (illness).
With the mutation, the virus becomes more virulent and caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of ducks that were previously immune. possibility of transmission of the two is from the outside, the transmission could be due to the import of poultry from countries infected with or transmitting viruses occur from the migration of wild birds. commented Emil, the two possible origins transmission should be investigated. If transmission occurs due to mutation of the virus, then you need to know what factors are causing it to happen and the extent of the movement of movements? Conversely if there is contagion from abroad, then imported poultry should be closed or watch migrating wild birds. (Tlc/OL-9)  http://m.mediaindonesia.com/index.php/read/2012/12/21/371768/293/14/Mutasi_Virus_Flu_Burung_masih_Misterius

CDC Says Risk Of New Coronavirus In Travelers Is Low, Offers Recommendations

With at least nine cases of the novel coronavirus confirmed in parts of the Middle East, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  issued a travel notice Thursday with recommendations on protecting against the virus.
The disease has been confirmed in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan. Five of the nine cases ended in death.
The CDC does say that the risk of the new coronavirus for travelers is thought to be low. CDC recommends that travelers to countries on the Arabian Peninsula or neighboring countries monitor their health and see a doctor right away if symptoms such as cough, breathing difficulties, and fever develop.
Not much is known about how easy or difficult it is the contract this virus.
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which are known to cause illness in humans and animals. This novel strain has never previously been detected in humans or animals.
Symptoms associated with the novel coronavirus have been acute, serious respiratory illness, which presented with fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties.
The CDC recommends that travelers to the Arabian Peninsula take the following precautions ( same as for flu) to prevent contracting this virus:..

Background and summary of novel coronavirus infection – as of 21 December 2012

Over the past three months, WHO has received reports of nine cases of human infection with a novel coronavirus. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses; different members of this family cause illness in humans and animals. In humans, these illnesses range from the common cold to infection with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) coronavirus (SARS CoV).
This summary provides the latest information on all reported cases and provides details of a WHO mission to Jordan, which has concluded since the last web update.
Thus far, the laboratory confirmed cases have been reported by Qatar (two cases), Saudi Arabia (five cases) and Jordan (two cases). All patients were severely ill, and five have died.
A total of five confirmed cases have been reported from Saudi Arabia. The first two are not linked to each other and lived in different parts of the country; one of these has died. Three other confirmed cases are epidemiologically linked and occurred in one family living within the same household; two of these have died. One additional family member in this household also became ill, with symptoms similar to those of the confirmed cases. This person has recovered and tested negative, by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, for the virus.
Two confirmed cases have been reported in Jordan. Both of these patients have died. These cases were discovered through testing of stored samples from a cluster of pneumonia cases in health care workers that occurred in April 2012.
In November 2012 staff from WHO Headquarters and the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office were invited to Jordan to assess severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) surveillance and infection prevention and control measures, and to review the April 2012 outbreak. The mission included hospital site visits, interviews with patients, relatives and caregivers, and review of case files. In addition to the two previously confirmed cases, a number of health care workers with pneumonia associated with the cases were also included in the review and are now considered probable case.
The main findings of this mission are:
  • The index case among this cluster could not be determined.
  • All patients had significant respiratory disease presenting as pneumonia. Disease was generally milder in the unconfirmed probable cases. One patient who is a probable case had symptoms that were mild enough to be managed at home and was not admitted to hospital.
  • No patient in this cluster had renal failure.
  • One patient presented with pneumonia and was discovered to also have pericarditis. This patient had laboratory confirmation of infection and has died.
  • A second patient developed disseminated intravascular coagulation as a complication of severe respiratory disease. This patient also had laboratory confirmation of infection and has died.
  • The method of exposure is uncertain.
  • There was no history of travel or contact with animals among confirmed or probable cases.
Most family members and health care workers who were closely exposed to confirmed and probable cases did not develop respiratory disease. However, the appearance of pneumonia in some who provided care and in at least two family members with direct personal contact increases the suspicion that person-to-person transmission may have occurred. The possibility of exposure to a common source has not been definitively excluded. Further investigation with serological testing (when it becomes available) to confirm additional cases may help determine the types of exposures that result in infection.
The current understanding of this novel virus is that it can cause a severe, acute respiratory infection presenting as pneumonia. The additional unconfirmed probable cases in Jordan indicate that milder presentations may also be a part of the clinical appearance associated with infection. Acute renal failure has occurred in five of the nine confirmed cases but was not a prominent feature of the Jordanian cluster. In addition, pericarditis and disseminated intravascular coagulation have now been seen in two confirmed cases.
WHO recognizes that the emergence of a new coronavirus capable of causing severe disease raises concerns because of experience with SARS. Although this novel coronavirus is distantly related to the SARS CoV, they are different. Based on current information, it does not appear to transmit easily or sustainably between people, unlike the SARS virus.
WHO has closely monitored the situation since detection of the first case and has been working with partners to ensure a high degree of preparedness should the new virus be found to be sufficiently transmissible to cause community outbreaks. Some viruses are able to cause limited human-to-human transmission under condition of close contact, as occurs in families, but are not transmissible enough to cause larger community outbreaks.
Actions taken by WHO in coordination with national authorities and technical partners include the following:
  • Investigations are ongoing to determine the likely source of infection and the route of exposure. Close contacts of confirmed cases are being identified and followed up.
  • An interim surveillance recommendation has been updated to assist clinicians to determine which patients should undergo laboratory testing for the presence of novel coronavirus.
  • Laboratory assays for the virus have been developed. Reagents and other materials for testing are available, as are protocols, algorithms and reference laboratory services. WHO has activated its laboratory network to assist in testing and other services. WHO has now issued preliminary guidance for laboratory biorisk management.
  • The three affected countries either have already or are in the process of acquiring the capacity to test for the novel coronavirus in national laboratories and have enhanced their surveillance activities according to WHO guidance along with other countries in the area.
  • WHO has created a webpage for coronavirus infections, with guidance for surveillance, infection control, biorisk management, and laboratory testing, which can be found at:http://www.who.int/csr/disease/coronavirus_infections/en/index.html
Based on the current situation and available information:
  • WHO encourages all Member States to continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and to carefully review any unusual patterns.
  • Further, testing for the new coronavirus of patients with unexplained pneumonias should be considered, especially in persons residing in or returning from the Arabian peninsula and neighboring countries. Any new cases should be promptly reported both to national health authorities and to WHO.
  • When collecting specimens for testing, priority should be given to collection of lower respiratory tract specimens such as sputa and endotracheal aspirates (for intubated patients).
  • In addition, any clusters of SARI or SARI in health care workers should be thoroughly investigated, regardless of where in the world they occur. These investigations will help determine whether the virus is distributed more widely in the human population beyond the three countries that have identified cases.
  • Health care workers should be advised to scrupulously adhere to standard infection control precautions for all patients. Droplet precautions should be added to standard precautions for any patient known or suspected to have an acute respiratory infection, including patients with suspected or confirmed infection with novel coronavirus. Airborne precautions should be used for aerosol-generating procedures, including intubation and related interventions. Details can be found on the website listed above.
  • WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event nor does it recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied.

WHO continues to monitor this situation closely. Unless information is received that changes our understanding of this virus and the disease it causes, the next web update is expected to be posted during the second week of January 2013.  http://www.who.int/csr/disease/coronavirus_infections/update_20121221/en/index.html

..The death forced Health Ministry officials to acknowledge that despite all its efforts, Indonesia had been unable to completely wipe out bird flu in the country as long as the infection remained endemic among poultry.

Indonesia has had a hard time controlling the spread of the disease because backyard farming is such an ingrained part of the culture. The Health Ministry has found that in some traditional markets in Jakarta, traces of the H5N1 virus are found not only on sick poultry, but alsotraces of the H5N1 virus are found as well as the vendors, although they were not infected.

By December, a total of 10 people were confirmed dead from bird flu.

Officials on alert for mutant strain of avian flu

Fri, December 21 2012, 8:46 AM

The West Java Husbandry Agency, for instance, has intensified its supervision of poultry traffic after the deaths of 300,000 ducks in Central Java, East Java and West Java due to the rainy season and the suspected avian flu outbreak.

“We issued a circular on Dec. 10, 2012, to supervise and inspect poultry traffic and distribution, as well as to anticipate the bird flu virus,” Husbandry Agency chief T. Koesmayadi said as quoted by Antara news agency in Bandung, West Java.

“The agency has formed a special team to be on the alert around the clock,” he added.

Koesmayadi said that the agency was currently investigating reports of suspicious poultry deaths in the regencies of Bekasi and Indramayu. Inspectors have taken blood samples from 150 chickens and ducks for analysis, he added.

According to officials, 292 ducks have died in December in Tukdana in Indramayu, 615 ducks have died in Cangkol in Cirebon, Central Java, and more than 1,300 deaths were reported in Pakandangan, East Java.

Koesmayadi told residents and poultry farmers to wash their hands properly and apply appropriate bio-security measures, especially after directly handling poultry.

Meanwhile, the Tulungagung Husbandry Office in East Java has announced on Thursday that lab samples of mucus, blood and feces taken from dead ducks in the regency tested positive for the avian flu virus.

“We have obtained the lab test results from the animal health lab in Malang. It showed that the cause of death for the thousands of ducks in Gondang district and the surrounding areas, including Trenggalek, was due to the bird flu virus,” Tulungagung Husbandry Office head Sujono said.

Sujono said that the bird flu virus has mutated from the H5N1 clade 2.1 to a new strain, identified as H5N1 clade 2.3, that only attacks ducks.

He claimed that the new strain could not be transmitted to humans, echoed Koesmayadi comments for residents to tend to their personal hygiene when handling ducks and to raise bio-security measures to prevent the outbreak from escalating.

The current duck population of Tulungagung has been estimated at 423,000. The H5N1 clade 2.3 virus has been recorded in five of the regency’s 19 districts

The Central Java Health Agency previously received a report of a suspected case of bird flu. The victim, a 54-year-old resident of Sambiroto subdistrict, is currently under treatment at St. Elisabeth Hospital in Semarang, the provincial capital.

Central Java Animal Husbandry Agency reported that more than 62,000 ducks may have died from the H5N1 virus in 21 regencies and cities in the province.

The Central Java Agriculture Agency has distributed 9,300 liters of disinfectant, calling on farmers to report any ducks who have recently died to the agency.

Bird flu has also caused the death of thousands of chickens in Bantul, Yogyakarta, over the past two months. Since 2005, a total of 192 cases of bird flu have been recorded in Indonesia, causing 160 deaths.  http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2012/12/21/officials-alert-mutant-strain-avian-flu.html

Bird-flu confirmed in Dhading farm

KATHMANDU, Dec 20: The government has confirmed bird-flu in a poultry farm in Naubise-1 Dharke of Dhading on Thursday.

The Central Animal Disease Investigation Laboratory (CADIL) under the Directorate of Animal Health (DoAH) confirmed that the samples of dead chickens were collected on Monday from the poultry farm owned by Laxmi Pokharel.

“We have formally confirmed the attack of the avian influenza at the farm, where around 3,000 heads of six months old broiler chicken died over a week,” said Dr Narayan Ghimire, spokesperson of DoAH.

After symptoms of bird flu were detected, the government mobilized Emergency Disease Investigation Team on Wednesday to initiate the disease control and containment process.

“Today (Thursday) a Rapid Response Team (RRT) has reached the infected farm to carry out the cleaning, disinfection and disposal of poultry products in a bid to control the possible spread of the fatal fowl disease,” said Ghimire. The RRT was deployed to the scene following instructions from Chief District Officer of Kathmandu District invoking Bird-flu Control Order 2007.

The team is tasked with removing poultry manure, eggs and feeds other poultry products from the infected farm.

The RRT led by Dr Arjun Aryal, includes ten veterinary technicians from CADIL and Dhading District Livestock Services Office. The RRT is expected to complete its task by Friday.

Another team also has been mobilized on Thursday to conduct a search and surveillance operation in other farms in the area around the infected farm.
He said process to provide compensation to the poultry farmer will be initiated after assessment of loss incurred due to the disease.

A total of 25 cases of bird-flu outbreak have been recorded in Nepal since 2008. The first case of the disease was reported in Jhapa.

Friday, December 21, 2012, 9:37 pm -The source of transmission of Avian Influenza Virus (Bird Flu)subclade 2.3.2 that strike a number of ducks in Indonesia  allegedly originated from China's vaccine industry home. Thus, the transmission is not through poultry, but the vaccine clade 2.3.2 AI . '' It is my guess that there may be livestock Indonesia take home AI vaccine clade 2.3.2 Industry of China. Maybe vaccine Clade 2.3.2 AI industry of China's home-made purchased by Vietnam, then spread to Indonesia,'''
said Unit Coordinator for Disease Control Avian Influenza (bird flu), or the Local Disease Control Centre (LDCC)Department of Agriculture (Distan) DIY Tri Rides, Friday (21/12).

According to him, farmers might mean to prevent the entry of virus AI clade 2.3.2 emerged in Indonesia. '' However, the application might actually do the transmission of the virus. It could be a mutation of the gene clade 2.1 to 2.3.2 . So most likely transmitted through the vaccine.Because if imports of poultry breeders actually been stranded in quarantine. If brought from abroad in the form of vaccines, may be brought by way of hidden,'' said Tri.
Accordingly, Tri hoped the government center in this case the Director General of Livestock and Animal Health did penelurusan back, who took it.
Although it is still a presumption, but if true would be bothersome people of Indonesia. said Tri, Vietnam has done depopulation of poultry on a large scale.'' If depopulation in Vietnam can be done easily, because the soldiers did. So that makes it all fast paced. Including early AI a few years ago, there were millions of birds that do depopulation and straight up,'' he explained. he admits AI virus transmission map that has been mutated (clade 2.3.2 ) could have known maps. During this time, he said, the virus H5N1 in Indonesia Clade 2.1. while AI clade 2.3.2 beginning comes from Vietnam, China. '' Maybe there breeders Indonesia who took the vaccine from home industry of China. When meeting with the Director General of Animal Husbandry and Health in Jakarta, December 18, yesterday, revealed there was a strong suspicion that the vaccine transfer AI clade 2.3.2 of Vietnam which is a home-made industry of China,'' he explained.

Based on previous years’ observations, an increase in reported H5N1 influenza events in poultry is expected for this time of year. Sporadic human cases reported this month in countries with known influenza A(H5N1) virus activity in poultry are within the expected range. No onward sustained human to human transmission was reported.

Public health risk assessment of avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses: The public health risk remains unchanged.
