Ireland Possible bird flu link to swan deaths
Veterinary scientists in the Republic are examining the possibility that bird flu may have killed over 30 swans at a Co Donegal lake.
Just a few miles from Dunfanaghy a wildlife haven called the New Lake is the permanent homes to scores of swans.
It's normally a safe haven, however, now investigations are underway to determine how a number of the swans have died.
In recent days 33 swans have been recovered from the waters of the lake. It's thought they may have died over a four week period.
The dead animals have been collected by the Republic's National Parks and Wildlife Service and samples have been sent to veterinary laboratories for testing.
A number of sick swans have also been rescued by the park service.
It's also emerged that tests are being carried out at another lake following the discovery of more dead animals.
Poisoning or water pollution is being considered as a cause of the deaths.
However, bird flu hasn't been ruled out much to the concern of residents living along the shoreline.
Because of those concerns around what has caused the deaths, the public are being warned that if they find a dead swan not to lift it or touch it. http://www.u.tv/news/Possible-bird-flu-link-to-swan-deaths/6694dcbb-5344-4b4a-8b5f-9be3391f2d7a
Coronavirus: no contamination for three people, a fourth case pending
LILLE (AFP) - 11.05.2013 8:14
Three suspected cases of infection with the new coronavirus, similar to that of SARS, are negative, while in a fourth case, a former neighbor patient sickroom reached, "further investigations are needed," according to the results of tests .Three people whose case was cause for concern are ultimately not affected by the close of the SARS virus, but doubts still remain about a fourth.
For the latter, a former roommate of patient suffering, "further investigations are needed," said the Ministry of Health said in a statement Saturday.
During his hospital stay in Valenciennes, from 27 to 29 April, the patient had coasted 65 year old man suffering from newcoronavirus (nCoV), close to the SARS. He is currently hospitalized and isolated Infectious Diseases Service at the University Hospital of Lille. This virus causes severe breathing problems.
One hundred and twenty people were identified in the surroundings of the patient, also hospitalized in Lille, serving ICU and hospital where he stayed at Valenciennes and Douai.
The health authorities have announced three suspects Thursday and Friday, including where additional tests are needed. A fourth case was identified Friday, where concerns have since been lifted.
Three people - the patient who had rubbed the patient, a doctor, a nurse - "and a fourth in the 10th of May had symptoms that led to virological sampling and placing them under observation in isolation in service Infectious Diseases, "the ministry said.
"For three people, negative results are to be confirmed by the national reference center of the Pasteur Institute in Paris," the ministry said.
The Minister of Health, Marisol Touraine, must go Saturday morning at University Hospital of Lille for a visit.
It is in this hospital only institution in the region practicing the medical care necessary for his health, the patient was transferred in midweek. His condition "serious but stable" according to the regional health agency, required the establishment of cardiopulmonary support to take over its respiratory functions.
The patient was presented April 23 at the Hospital of Valenciennes (North), where he was followed for a chronic disease. He had digestive problems. As the ICU was full, it was then transferred April 29 to hospital Douai (Nord), where respiratory problems had been reported.
The first case of infection with the new virus had been confirmed in France on May 7, said the Ministry of Health.
Cases of infection have been detected in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Kingdom and Germany. A total of 33 confirmed cases in the world of this new virus have been reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) since September 2012 and 18 people died, including 11 in Saudi Arabia.
Most people who have the virus was detected developed severe respiratory failure SARS type, severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by another virus that killed nearly 800 people in China and Asia in 2003. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath and other breathing difficulties.
The new coronavirus - the virus of this family are many and varied, which can affect humans as animals - has been tentatively named nCoV.
According to the Institute of Health, the two British patients had not traveled in the region of the Arabian Peninsula, but had been in contact with a patient.
"These factors strongly suggest the existence of human transmission of infection," said InVS, but the data collected to date indicate that this mode of transmission is not "important". http://www.tv5.org/cms/chaine-francophone/info/p-1911-redir.htm?&rub=1&xml=newsmlmmd.491a79cadc2b5f05acb1805dee03a9ed.d1.xml

MERS-CoV Cluster In France Increase To FourRecombinomics Commentary 12:45
May 10, 2013
A third case of coronavirus is suspected in the North after infection confirmed a 65 year old man who had stayed in Dubai, announced the Regional Agency for Health. "We have a third suspect this morning, with a nurse Douai, "said Thursday, May 10 Dr. Sandrine Segovia Kueny, Deputy Director General of the LRA, on France Bleu Nord.May 10, 2013
The above translation describes a third hospital contact of a confirmedMERS-CoV case in France, who has developed SARS-like symptoms. Earlier reports described a patient (50M) and a doctor (35F) who were also hospitalized after developing symptoms (see map).
This cluster, which is not yet confirmed, follows reports out of eastern Saudi Arabia which describes two additional confirmed clusters linked to hospitalized patients. Moreover, WHO has finally released the number of probably cases (11) linked to two confirmed cases who were health care workers in an ICU in Jordan. WHO noted that 10 of the 13 cases in Jordan were health care workers, and the additional cases were contacts, which included two mild cases. The additional cases were classified as probable cases because of testing failures.
The spread of MERS-CoV in hospital setting is much like the spread of SARS in 2003. About 20% of confirmed cases were health care workers and WHO has warned against hospital clusters for the current coronavirus which is beta 2c in contrast to SARS-CoV, which is beta 2b.
Like SARS-CoV in 2003, the first clusters outside of the Middle East are in countries which received cases which had traveled to the epicenter (Saudi Arabia on 2013 and China in 2003).
These recent cases reinforce the concept that MERS-CoV is one flight away, and more cases in Europe and beyond are expected.
WHO Visits Saudi Arabia to Investigate Coronavirus Cases
By Jason Gale & Kristen Hallam - May 10, 2013 6:52 AM ET
Two World Health Organization employees travelled to Saudi Arabia on May 8 to meet with local health officials on the novel coronavirus, after an outbreak at a hospital there.
The WHO trip was in addition to a visit by international scientists who were invited by the country, Gregory Hartl, a WHO spokesman, said in an e-mailed statement today.
“The purpose of the WHO mission is to better understand the situation and to provide guidance,” Hartl said. “The WHO team may meet with some of the international scientists, but will primarily hold discussions with the Ministry of Health.”
Saudi Arabia reported two more confirmed cases of the virus, in a 48-year-old man and a 58-year-old man, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 15, the Geneva-based WHO said yesterday. Both patients are linked to an outbreak this month in a health-care facility, and Saudi officials are investigating, the health agency said. Thirty-three people worldwide are known to have been sickened by the virus since September, and 18 of them have died, the WHO said.
There hasn’t been any evidence yet of sustained transmission of the new coronavirus, Hartl said. Limited human-to-human infection probably occurred previously in Saudi Arabia as well as in the U.K., where three members of a family were diagnosed with the illness in February.
Limited Transmission
“We know of at least two instances -- a previous event in Saudi Arabia and the event in the U.K. -- where there was likely limited human-to-human transmission, but as of this moment there has not been any sustained, community-level spread,” he said. “What we know today may not apply tomorrow, as this is a rapidly evolving event.”
France reported its first confirmed case of the infection this week. The patient had traveled to the Middle East, where the first cases of the virus were reported last year, according to theWorld Health Organization. Her roommate, doctor and a nurse have been hospitalized for tests in Valenciennes, in northern France, France Info reported on its website.
Coronaviruses are a family of pathogens that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, which sickened more than 8,000 people and killed 774 in 2002 and 2003, according to the WHO. While the new virus is related to the one that causes SARS, it appears far less transmissible, the WHO has said. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-05-10/who-visits-saudi-arabia-to-investigate-coronavirus-cases.html
Confusion over number of coronavirus patients in Al-Ahsa
Confusion over number of coronavirus patients
Last Update 10 May 2013 2:48 am
Conflicting reports are emerging from Al-Ahsa about the number of coronavirus infections in the region.
The Al-Ahsa health department has said that there is only one confirmed case. However, the brother of a person infected with the virus said yesterday that in the hospital there are at least four persons in isolated rooms who are suspected of being infected.
One of the physicians treating infected patients refused to reveal the number of confirmed cases. “We are not allowed to reveal any details in this regard.”
Ibrahim Al-Higgi, spokesman for Al-Ahsa department of health, would not answer any questions because only the ministry is authorized to provide public statements.
A 19-year-old woman was discharged from King Fahd hospital in Hofuf after it was confirmed that she was not infected with the virus.
But two of her brothers were infected and the virus claimed the life of her father. One of her brothers, 28, left the hospital after being cured. Her other brother, 31, is still in the intensive care unit at King Fahd hospital.
A brother of the two infected patients said that he tried to meet Dr. Abdullah Asiri, who is in charge of infection control at the Ministry of Health, who visited Al-Ahsa last Tuesday. “But two hours prior to the appointment, he called me and said he could not meet me, although he visited my brother in the ICU.”
He added: “We are still at a loss about the condition of our brother who is still in the hospital.”The Ministry of Health announced earlier that there were 13 people infected with the deadly virus, of whom seven died. http://www.arabnews.com/news/451085

Coronavirus: a hundred people under "surveillance"
Coronavirus: a hundred people have been in contact with the patient
Between Valenciennes and Douai, a place where the patient was hospitalized by the coronavirus, a hundred people are currently under "surveillance". If symptoms such as abnormal cough or fever occur, they will be placed in isolation for analysis. Currently, there are three suspects but are still not proven. A doctor of Valenciennes, a former roommate of Valenciennes and Douai nurse. These suspects are currently hospitalized and Tourcoing respectively for the doctor, and Lille former roommate and nurse Douai . Their health is not a concern. They are just waiting for test results. At 18:00, a press conference is scheduled for Regional Health Agency. The schedule was chosen in order to indicate whether the three suspects are known or not. The analysis results will then be known.
3 suspected cases of SARS-related virus in France
After a doctor and a patient, a nurse, who has been in contact with a 65 year old man infected with a new virus causing severe respiratory problems, also has symptoms raising fears of contamination, said Friday the regional agency Health Nord-Pas-de-Calais (ARS).
"We have isolated, number, people who had been contact with the patient, both health professionals and patients, and we have an incubation period of ten days," she said. Symptoms are "breathing and feverish," she said. "We have a very broad definition of cases to sample and isolate all persons who may have been in contact with this person," she explained. May 10, 2013 3:39 pm
Paris - Three suspected cases of the SARS-like coronavirus have been discovered in northern France, health authorities said Friday after confirming the country's first case of the deadly respiratory infection this week.
The three cases were believed to be linked to that of a65-year-old man, who was hospitalised last month after a visit to Dubai and Saudi Arabia. The health ministry confirmed he had France’s first known case of coronavirus.
Since then, a doctor in the town of Valenciennes, where he received treatment; a patient who shared his hospital room; and a nurse from the nearby town of Douai, where he was first hospitalised, have all presented with coronavirus symptoms, the health agency of the northern region said. There’s Another New, Deadly Virus On The Verge Of An Outbreak
The H7N9 bird flu virus in China isn’t the only scary new virus on the docket this spring.
A second new virus, similar to SARS and named Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS CoV), has been popping up in the Middle East since last summer and was first described in the New England Journal of Medicine in November.
The virus is a coronavirus, the same family of viruses that unleashed SARS a decade ago. SARS infected 8,273 people and caused 775 deaths worldwide.
It is making waves this week as recent cases have been found in France and 13 new cases have been announced in the past couple weeks, according to Science Magazine.
The virus has killed a total of 18 people, according to FluTrackers. While the number of people infected by this new virus is low, 33 according to reports, there’s concern over a few clusters of cases that could indicate that the virus can be transmitted easily between people.
The virus has also traveled outside of the Middle East — to the United Kingdom, France, and Germany — by people who had recently visited the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, or Saudi Arabia.
The virus caused secondary infection in the family members of one infected person in the U.K., as well as eight health care workers who involved in the original outbreak of the virus in Jordan in April 2012 — two of whom died.
What’s become worrisome now is the spread of the virus within one hospital. According to CTVNews, citing health authorities in Saudi Arabia, 15 of the 33 reported patients infected with the virus had all been to the Al-Moosa Hospital in the town of Hofuf before they got sick. Seven of them have died.
Saudi Arabian deputy health minister, Dr. Ziad Memish, implied in a ProMED posting that the cluster had been controlled, “actions implemented and fully applied by 1 May 2013 have been effective to date in preventing new cases related to this cluster from emerging.”
According to New Scientist’s Threatwatch, the virus that researchers sequenced from those patients had three new mutations — though officials didn’t say what impact those mutations had on the viruses’ lethality or likelihood of spreading from person to person.
This could mean that the virus was spreading from person to person, at least in that hospital. If an airborne version of the virus escapes the hospital it could be another SARS in the making.
Researchers are also worried that the virus could cause infections in otherwise healthy people and they won’t show extreme or obvious symptoms. These kind of weak infections could let the virus adapt to humans, New Scientist reports.
