It is understood that, as of now, Zhejiang confirmed three cases of human infection with the H7N9 avian influenza, and 2 deaths. First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine experts summarize the H7N9 flu deaths characteristics, found that people infected with the H7N9 avian flu death cases men, smoking men.
Zhejiang patients was the death of the "blitzkrieg"
Zheda a hospital with severe Care unit main Renfang Jiang said in an interview, the virus is just a self-limiting disease, to weather this difficult period, the chance of survival of the patient, is still very large.
He said, because the virus has just appeared, Zhejiang 3 infected diagnosed already critically ill patients. The event of respiratory failure, progress extremely rapidly, respiratory failure, hypoxemia, and with the ventilator, the results are not good.
According to reports, on March 25, doctors see the Hangzhou patients Mr. Yang lungs film is not surprised to two days later, the inflammation of the range from the lower lobe of the left lung, the left lung upper lobe expansion, the rapid emergence of lesions. April 2, patients go to Zheda a hospital, two lungs are basically white lung. After Zheda hospitalized, the patient vital signs stable.

  Why more male patients died?
Leung Wai Fung analysis of the H7N9 avian influenza virus "hobby" lung cells, through analysis of the patient's life history, smoking is the key word, the one example smoking for 20 years, one case up to 38 years. Smoking patients with poor lung function patients may easily infected by the "attack".
Leung Wai Fung said that this person infected with the H7N9 bird flu cases, there is a very strange phenomenon, early patient seems to not feel anything, but suddenly increase to 7-11 days of illness, the majority of the patients or respiratory failure, because viral invasions of the main parts of the lungs poor oxygenation, it follows that poor heart and lung capacity, and multiple organ failure....

Human infection with influenza A(H7N9) virus in China - update

As of 6 April 2013 (16:45 CET), the Chinese health authorities notified WHO of an additional two laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with influenza A(H7N9) virus.
Both of these cases are from Shanghai. The first patient is a 74-year-old man, who became ill on 28 March 2013, and is now in critical condition. The other is a 66-year-old man who became ill on 29 March 2013 and is considered a mild case.
To date, a total of 18 cases have been laboratory confirmed with influenza A(H7N9) virus in China, including six deaths, ten severe cases and two mild cases.
More than 530 close contacts of the confirmed cases are being closely monitored. In Jiangsu, investigation is ongoing into a contact of an earlier confirmed case who developed symptoms of illness.
The Chinese government is actively investigating this event and has heightened disease surveillance. Retrospective testing of recently reported cases with severe respiratory infection may uncover additional cases that were previously unrecognized. An inter-government task force has been formally established, with the National Health and Family Planning Commission leading the coordination along with the Ministry of Agriculture and other key ministries. The animal health sector has intensified investigations into the possible sources and reservoirs of the virus.
WHO is in contact with national authorities and is following the event closely. The WHO-coordinated international response is also focusing on work with WHO Collaborating Centres for Reference and Research on Influenza and other partners to ensure that information is available and that materials are developed for diagnosis and treatment and vaccine development. No vaccine is currently available for this subtype of the influenza virus. Preliminary test results provided by the WHO Collaborating Centre in China suggest that the virus is susceptible to the neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir and zanamivir).
At this time there is no evidence of ongoing human-to-human transmission.
WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event, nor does it recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be appliedhttp://www.who.int/csr/don/2013_04_06/en/index.html

Chang, who is also serving as head of the Central Epidemic Command Center, has been in touch with Chinese health officials in recent days on the avian flu outbreak and arranged for the Taiwanese doctors to make the trip.

Chou Jih-haw, CDC deputy director-general, said the names of the infectious disease specialists will "be withheld for the time being so as not to interfere with their work."

The two doctors' itinerary will not be determined until they get settled in Shanghai, Chou said, adding that the CDC will keep in touch with them.

China has confirmed 16 H7N9 bird flu cases with six deaths so far.

The New Taipei Public Health Department, meanwhile, said that around 380,000 Tamiflu pills remain at various hospitals and clinics from a supply distributed late last year, which it said should be enough to deal with the new bird flu strain.

Health officials said the department supplies Tamiflu for use during the peak flu season between December and March every year and has decided to leave the anti-flu drug at medical facilities until the end of the April to deal with potential H7N9 cases.

They also urged the hospitals to step up their monitoring of patients and notify authorities of suspected cases within 24 hours.

Taichung health authorities have also decided to extend the use of free Tamiflu to the end of this month amid the H7N9 alert.   http://focustaiwan.tw/news/aall/201304060020.aspx

Dead man's family claims bird flu cover-up by hospital

Saturday, 06 April, 2013, 5:33am
Wu Demao was bewildered when he heard that his son-in-law, Wu Liangliang, who died on March 10 at Shanghai No 5 People's Hospital, was a victim of H7N9 bird flu.
"No one has so far officially informed us of the true cause of his death," Wu said. "It was one of our relatives who told us that the local television had reported that my son-in-law died of a new strain of bird flu."
Wu Liangliang, 27, from Yancheng in Jiangsu, was the second man found to have caught H7N9 flu in Shanghai, the city government announced at a press conference on Tuesday, giving only his family name.
He arrived in Shanghai in February to visit his parents-in-law and helped Wu Demao, a pork vendor at a wet market on Jinggu Road in Minhang district.
Wu Liangliang suffered from high fever in late February and initial treatment by a nearby clinic and the No5 People's Hospital proved unsuccessful. He was admitted on March 1.
Doctors told the family he had pneumonia and he was not put into quarantine, Wu Demao said.
The hospital paid the family 130,000 yuan (HK$161,000) in compensation on March 26, saying it was for humanitarian reasons and for its minor responsibility in Wu Liangliang's treatment, without elaborating.
"They should have been responsible for giving us the true reason for his death," Wu Demao said. "We couldn't understand why a healthy young man could have passed away so quickly."
Family members are angry, accusing the hospital of covering up Wu Liangliang's illness.
"We went to ask the hospital to clarify whether it was the bird flu that killed him, but their attitude was rude and unacceptable," Wu Demao said. "They said we should go ask the television station to check out whether the death was due to bird flu."
The central and municipal authorities have pledged to ensure transparency in informing the media and the public of the extent of the H7N9 outbreak.
The No5 People's Hospital turned down an interview request on Thursday.
Wu Demao said his family was considering appeals to the Shanghai and central governments in their fight for justice.
"But I am still worried whether high-level officials would protect the hospital. We are ordinary civilians and it is a hospital controlled and run by the government," he said.  http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1208123/i-was-not-officially-told-cause-death-says-father-law-h7n9-flu
