Cambodia reports 9th bird flu case, 8th death so far this year

Xinhua | 2013-2-26 13:07:46
Cambodia reported on Tuesday that a 35-year-old man died of Avian Influenza H5N1, bringing the death toll to eight and the number of cases to nine in 2013, health officials and victim's family said Tuesday.
The man, identified as Thoeun Doeun, lived in Trung Trang district of Eastern Kampong Cham province.
"He died of the bird flu virus last night after a four-day medical treatment at the Calmete Hospital in Phnom Penh," Suon Sokhy, younger sister of the victim, told Xinhua over telephone.
She said that her brother became sick after he took a dead duck to cook and ate.
"Doctor told me that he died of bird flu," she said.
Sonny Krishnan, communications officer with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Cambodia, confirmed the death on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, he appealed to people to be high vigilant over the virus, saying that home slaughtering and preparation of sick or dead poultry for food is hazardous.
"This practice must be stopped. The greatest risk of exposure to the virus is through the handling and slaughter of live infected poultry," he said.
He added that parents and guardians should keep their children away from poultry -- do not allow them to touch feathers and do not keep poultry in their house.
"Parents and guardians must also make sure children wash their hands with soap and water after any contact with poultry," he said. "If they have fast or difficult breathing, they should seek medical attention at the nearest health facility."
Cambodia's Health Minister Mam Bunheng appealed to people to be more careful about the outbreaks of bird flu virus.
"I'd like to urge people not to eat ill or dead poultry," he told reporters on the sidelines of a health meeting on Tuesday. " Poultry must be cooked well. Properly cooked poultry meat is therefore safe to consume."
The country sees the worst outbreak of the virus this year since the disease was first identified in 2004. To date, the country has recorded 30 human cases of the virus, killing 27 people.  http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/764248.shtml

Cambodia recorded the 8th deaths from the H5N1 flu virus

(VOV) - The victim is said to have contact and ingestion of poultry infected with the H5N1 virus.Cambodian health officials on 26/2 has also recorded one case of death from H5N1 influenza virus infection. This is the 8th of deaths in the country since the start of this year.
Victims were male, 35 years old, living in the central district, Kampong Cham province, died on the night of 25/2 after 4 days of treatment at Calmete Hospital in Phnom Penh (Cambodia).
The initial cause was the victim's exposure and ingestion of poultry infected with the H5N1 virus.
Mr. Sonny Krishnan, staff of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Cambodia have confirmed this information, and urged people to stop slaughtering and eating infected poultry.
Mr. Krishna also asked parents and guardians should not let children near or in contact with poultry and poultry should not be in the house because children are the most vulnerable to infectious due to a weakened immune system .
So far, Cambodia has confirmed 30 cases of infection, including 27 deaths. H5N1 virus is usually spread from poultry to humans through direct contact, but experts fear the virus could change into a variable can be easily transmitted from person to person. /.  http://vov.vn/The-gioi/Campuchia-ghi-nhan-ca-tu-vong-thu-8-do-virus-cum-H5N1/249819.vov

SUMAN 2.1 million birds slaughtered IN MEXICO H7N3

AVIAR25FEB
Mexico. - Mexican authorities have culled 2.1 million birds affected by avian flu outbreak that has spread to 18 farms in the central state of Guanajuato, officials said.
The Secretary of Agriculture (SAGARPA), Enrique Martinez, said at a press conference that since the outbreak was detected were culled 519,000 birds producing eggs, 900,000 and 722,265 broiler breeder flocks.
He stressed that these losses do not affect the national inventory, which covers 140 million laying hens and 300 million broilers.
The minister said the outbreak was controlled and kept being resolved in the affected area, "a complex task because it is a highly pathogenic virus that requires great efforts to prevent its spread."
The National Service of Health, Food Safety and Quality (Senasica) indicated that their technicians have tested 35 chicken farms in Guanajuato and four million birds, of which 1.3 million are not affected by the H7N3 avian influenza.
The owner of Senasica, Enrique Sanchez Cruz, told the press conference because it is an exotic virus, Mexican birds have no natural defense against it and the only protection the vaccine is produced in Mexico, who "worked extraordinarily ".
Since starting a health emergency, has been distributed 22 million vaccines and this week will be distributed 40 million more, he said.
A farm company Pilgrim's Pride was reported today in the presence of the virus and thus joined the production units of the company Bachoco said Sanchez, who asked the producers to remain vigilant and strengthen biosecurity.
For his part, Secretary of Economy, Ildefonso Guajardo, clarified that there is no reason to cause shortages of these products, or excuse or pretext to increase the prices of chicken and egg.
The Federal Consumer Protection inspects and monitors permanently the case, said the minister, who considered it very important to work with poultry producers to curb the outbreak, as it is a strategic sector in the national food chain.
Since last February 15, the administration declared a health emergency after Bachoco reported a possible outbreak of avian influenza.
From that time established an alert in the area and was able to identify the presence of this outbreak in twelve farms originally four municipalities of Guanajuato.
In June last year there was an outbreak of the same virus that led to the authorities and producers to slaughter more than 22 million birds affected, sparking a shortage of egg and chicken meat and the consequent rise in prices.   http://www.siete24.mx/nacional/36501-suman-21-millones-de-aves-sacrificadas-en-mexico-

The Scottish Government said that the strain that struck down Jenny Scott is not the same as the one involved in the 2009 pandemic.
Microbiologist Professor Hugh Pennington said: “Expectant women should get themselves immunised as flu during pregnancy can be nasty.
“In the late stages women can struggle to breathe as well as they did and their immune system is lowered.
“We are also isolating viruses to see if they have changed.
“What the labs can’t tell us is how bad they will be. We have to wait and see how they affect people.”

Health chief tells of quicker tests in wake of SARS

Hong Kong may conduct rapid tests for the novel coronavirus earlier than elsewhere after years of vigilance over SARS, Secretary for Food and Health Ko Wing-man said.
Since September, when the novel coronavirus emerged in Saudi Arabia, there have been 13 confirmed cases, including seven deaths overseas.
The latest case involved a patient who was hospitalized in Saudi Arabia on January 29 and died on February 10. The World Health Organization revealed this on Friday.
Ko said what impressed him most during the SARS outbreak 10 years ago was the solidarity of the community and medical staff.
The government will keep working on building medical facilities, reinforcing the risk reporting system and training more doctors specialized in infectious diseases.
"We will not be laid back," Ko said, reminding the public to maintain personal hygiene and not to touch or eat wild animals.
The president of the American College of Chest Physicians (Hong Kong & Macau Chapter), Johnny Chan Wai- man, said the novel coronavirus has a more than 50percent mortality rate and may replicate in two days.
While person-to-person transmission is possible, Chan said experts still do not know much about the illness.
Meanwhile, frontline medical staff shared their memories of the 2003 SARS outbreak in Hong Kong.
A specialist in respiratory medicine, Yeung Koon-sing, was infected while a medical student at Ward 8A of Prince of Wales Hospital, where the index patient was first treated.
Wh
en Yeung was about to be discharged, his father was admitted to Ward 9A and died of heart disease.
Joseph Sung Jao-yiu, who was the associate dean (clinical) of the Chinese University's Faculty of Medicine, arranged for Yeung to bid his father a final goodbye garbed in protective gear.
"I thought I had lost a reason to become a doctor because of his death," Yeung said. "I refused to shave or shower and was in shock for a few days."
He said his girlfriend - who later became his wife - paid him a visit in the ward.
"Someone in protective gear tapped me on the shoulder and I realized it was her. She told me to keep going and said `your father doesn't want you to fall."'
A registered nurse in respiratory medicine, Natalie Chan Ho-yan, who also served in Ward 8A, said most of the staff in the ward were infected.
"We encouraged each other to overcome the hardship," Chan said. Her mother would bring food but was not allowed to go inside the hospital. http://www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?we_cat=4&art_id=131355&sid=39060427&con_type=3&d_str=20130225&fc=10

“We have had a confirmed case of a significant flu type illness

A woman is in a critical but stable condition in intensive care after contracting a form of swine flu.
• Pregnant woman collapsed at mother’s funeral.
• Patient was airlifted to specialist hospital in Leicester.
Jennifer Scott was transferred by helicopter from Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary earlier this week after she was diagnosed with a serious “flu type illness”.
She is currently being treated at the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester where there is specialist equipment to deal with serious conditions such as this.
It was reported that Ms Scott, understood to be 27-years-old and from Sanquhar in Dumfriesshire, was pregnant and collapsed during her mother’s funeral.
Transferred
At hospital, doctors performed an emergency caesarean section before Ms Scott was airlifted to Leicester.
A spokesman for NHS Dumfries and Galloway said: “We have had a confirmed case of a significant flu type illness.
“That case has been transferred and there are no other confirmed cases.”
A spokeswoman for University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust said: “We can confirm that the patient has been transferred to Glenfield Hospital and is currently on a ECMO machine in ITU.
“The patient was flown to Glenfield Hospital as it is one of a limited number of hospitals in the UK that has this specialist piece of equipment. The patient is currently in a critical but stable condition.”

SWINE flu mum Jennifer Scott collapsed at her own mother’s funeral after being struck down with the deadly disease.

The pregnant 27-year-old had been desperate to say a final farewell to beloved mum Patricia, despite feeling ill.
But she collapsed during the service and had to be rushed to hospital where her baby girl was delivered by an emergency Caesarean section.
Jennifer was then flown to a specialist hospital in England where she was last night fighting for her life.
Last night her shattered pal Lucy Roberts, who fears her 18-month-old son also has the disease, said: “I’m worried out of my mind for her.
“I was told Jenny began coughing and just couldn’t catch her breath.
“An ambulance had to come and take her to hospital.
“Her baby was born by Caesarean and then she was put in a coma.
“It’s a terrible thing to happen and she is one of the nicest, most generous people you could meet.”
Mum-of-three Lucy, 29, told how grieving Jennifer had been feeling unwell in the days leading up to her mum’s funeral. But the brave carer, of Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire was determined to still attend the service for 60-year-old Patricia.
Her baby daughter arrived safely at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary in the early hours of February 14, but when Lucy went to visit her pal she was unconscious.
Days later the stricken mum was taken by helicopter to Leicester’s Glenfield Hospital, where doctors have specialist equipment to treat seriously ill swine flu victims.
So close ... Jennifer with mum Patricia
So close ... Jennifer with mum Patricia
Jennifer was hooked up to a vital ECMO machine which pumps oxygen around the body of critically ill patients.
Lucy said: “Doctors had to come up by helicopter to take her to Leicester.
“With the death of Patricia and now this the family are going through hell.”
Worried Lucy claimed she was told by docs that her son Tyler was also showing potential symptoms of the bug.
Jennifer had been staying with Lucy and Tyler at their home in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire, in the days before the funeral.
Lucy said: “At that point she was just feeling some aches and pains and had a cough, but she was putting it down to her pregnancy.
“She was helping out with Tyler, who is her godson, so had quite close contact with him.” Despite Lucy’s fears, health chiefs insist Jennifer is the only confirmed case of the swine flu bug in the area.
The mum added: “The doctors were talking about me being an over-anxious mum. They made me feel so small that when he was ill I didn’t want to call 999 in case I was being a pest.
“I’m furious at the way I was treated. I was sure that they had the same illness and told them that he’d been in contact with Jenny, but the doctors wouldn’t listen. You would think that they would take another outbreak of it more seriously. I just don’t want anyone else catching it.”
Last night Scottish Sun doctor Carol Cooper warned that people who were pregnant or sick were most at risk from swine flu. And she revealed viruses like the H1N1 strain would always be prevalent in society.
She said: “No one knows why it is back. Cold weather is a factor as low temperatures make it easier for viruses to take hold.
“They are unpredictable, but we can say that it is far more serious in pregnant women. People with lung disease, heart disease and diabetes are also likely to get more ill from it. Young people and children seem to catch it more because they’re less likely to have antibodies already.”
Last night the Scottish Government insisted the strain is NOT the same as the one involved in the 2009 pandemic which killed 20,000 people worldwide.
Dumfries and Galloway Health Board said they had only one confirmed case of the bug in the area.

Disease reporting follows the MSM path to conformity
Lately Disease reporting has fallen to the wayside of  complicity and conformity. Gone are the days of real investigations into outbreaks of new and killer diseases. You can still find a few people in asia that are actually reporting some news, but again, that is heavily censored. Very few are putting their ass on the line to bring you anything short of the official word. Nowadays, most reporters are happy to
mouth the official word of gov'ts and a few scientists or small time health officials.

When blogging about flu or other emerging diseases, it looks like most are happy to swallow the daily swill. Like the main television news corporations or newspapers, the same story is repeated over and over, with a slightly different wording' like this is going to make it a new report.
In fact, if it is not dribbled out the mouth of a low ranking gov't official, it never happened.
Where are all the real "boots on the ground" reporters?
I can only think of a small handful of people that actually search and machine translate any worthwhile
news. Enjoy this while you can.  If you have to wait around for an English report about a foreign event, you are already 2 days behind. In fact it is not unusual to not even see it reported in any English speaking paper or an English speaking t.v. tube..EVER. I can watch the MSM news right now and see a breaking story that is 2 days old or better.
This does not pertain to disease news exclusively, oh no, everything you are seeing on CNN, FOX, MSNBC or any of the other broadcast news stations are only telling you what they are paid to tell you.
In the case of disease news, they and the gov't are doing all they can, to NEVER mention an outbreak of a serious disease, much less keep you informed about the latest information on it.
Go to the CDC website right now and look at the date on the novel coronavirus page. Finally updated  http://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/ncv/case-def.html

Go to the Who avian influenza page..now updated 1 time a month. Go to the Saudi Arabia U.S. EMBASSY and type in CORONAVIRUS. Maybe try your luck at the Cambodia Embassy page. Look for a travel alert,or an updated avian influenza page. At least 8 or 9 infected and 7 dead in a few weeks time. Ever see that metioned on tv? Or at the CDC Travel site?

Instead we find a bunch of half truths, false information or no mention at all of said disease outbreaks.. Where are the reporters talking about that!?
When the real outbreaks and problems are upon us, YOU WILL BE STUCK LIKE A PIG. Wondering to yourself "What is it?", "Where did it come from?","What do I do now?"
You can then look at your own gov't officials, your own media, and your own children, and tell them you trusted the health authorities and news reporters to keep you informed with timely information. WHY didn't they?

Fighting Avian Influenza

By William E. Todd,  U.S. Ambassador of Cambodia

17-FEB-13
I have been told by Cambodian health officials that there have been six confirmed deaths in less than two months and that a total of eight cases of avian influenza (H5N1) have been reported.

 Vietnam
Department of Preventive Health (MOH) said the A/H5N1 flu in Cambodia has spilled over the border, can outbreak in the southern provinces of Vietnam.
In the provinces bordering Cambodia at high risk for influenza A/H5N1 outbreak
In adjacent areas between Tay Ninh and Cambodia, Veterinary Authority region 6 (MARD) has discovered two outbreaks in the Tien Thuan and Binh Minh Ben Cau district. Risk of spread to poultry outbreaks and to people in the southern provinces are at a high level, especially in the provinces bordering Cambodia as Tay Ninh, Binh Phuoc, Long An. Meanwhile, the trade in poultry slaughter of unknown origin difficult to control in the South increases the risk of A/H5N1 flu infection in humans and animals http://vov.vn/Xa-hoi/Cum-AH5N1-co-the-bung-phat-thanh-dich-o-phia-Nam/249306.vov
For reasons not distinguish discarded chicken broilers reared in water, most of the livestock specialist, said: "If birds were plucked, it is true that it is difficult to distinguish but with live chickens on the eyes often easy to know where a chicken in less than 2 years with chickens raised in just 6 months old ". Officials "assured" that a threat to public health, the custody or burial place is a job very urgent, and difficult to give reasons to quibble seems to be wrong.
The provincial prevent ineffective for three reasons: One is the provincial leadership not drastically in direction,
and the other is the capacity of the poor market managers,
three that they accepted bribes and for cars go through!
Another question is if the government is not in the fierce and direct the results today? The answer is no and chicken waste are illegally imported into Vietnamhttp://hanoimoi.com.vn/Tin-tuc/Luan-ban-Hanh-dong/577437/neu-chinh-phu-khong-vao-cuoc

No Need To Worry

(VNA) - Live poultry not quarantined are rampant on sale on many roads in the city.
Avian influenza is circulating in Cambodia caused seven deaths and risk of spread to Vietnam. However, the trade, transportation, slaughter still happening area city.HCM. Currently, in some coastal route, spontaneous markets, live poultry is sold openly.
City: Poultry 'brain', high-risk disease
Chicken is on sale for you, territory bordering Go Vap District 12 and District
These include a series of "hot spots" as follows: on the bridge An Loc (line Ha Huy Giap, District 12 Bounded Nguyen Oanh, Go Vap); demand Universities (Le Duc Tho, bordering Q. 12 and Go Vap); Binh Hung Hoa Market (old) on the Strategic Hamlet (Binh Hung Hoa A Ward, Binh Tan); along Nguyen Thi Small (border between District 5 and District 6 , Ho Chi Minh City, close to Tran Chanh Chieu Market area) ...
There is also the business of slaughtering persist for many years, Binh Long Point near the intersection of Tan Ky Tan Quy (Binh Tan), along Provincial Highway 10 (between Binh Tan and H. Binh District), Cau Market (District 12), Phan Van For ...
Poultry sold with prices ranging from 80-100 thousand dollars / child. This price cheaper poultry quarantined about 10-30 thousand dollars. So many people choose to buy cheap goods without interest and poultry origin were quarantined or not?
Worryingly, when demand sellers will slaughter in place therefore a very high risk of disease spread. Moreover, the environmental sanitation in the region can not be guaranteed. For example, e buckling of the bridge Sa, many business owners unauthorized post-mortem All directly "finished" down line make anyone through this channel also nose by smell, smelling the heady concentration anonymously.
