Found avian influenza H7 in Denmark

Found avian influenza in Denmark

Bird flu detected in shot Gråanden southern Denmark. But scientists downplaying found.
- Just this finding has no significance, since we consider it unlikely that this candidate will draw north to us now. But it's a good reminder to poultry owners that these viruses are at all times, so we must be careful, says head of poultry health, Bruce David, by the Norwegian Veterinærinstiuttet to ABC News.
Bird flu found in a shot Gråanden in a wetland area near the town of Varde in west Denmark.
Because of the change in the weather is not known where the rest of the herd from the same features are now.
The highly pathogenic influenza virus H7 was found in a routine surveillance reports on the Danish Fødevarestyrelsens website .
- This is not the same kind as the H5N1 avian flu that caused major problems and took the lives of many people. But in the case of a pathogenic virus that can cause major problems in poultry livestock, David explains to ABC News.

Bird flu detected in Pokhara, 3,500 chickens slaughtered

POKHARA, JAN 17 -

Some 3,500 chickens were slaughtered in four different poultry farms in Pokhara, Kaski, on Wednesday as bird flu (H5N1) virus was detected there. The Regional Directorate of Livestock Services in Pokhara confirmed an outbreak of the avian flu in the poultry farms at Batulechaur, Simpani, Birauta and Sedibagar in Pokhara.

Regional Director Banshi Sharma said the chickens were slaughtered as a test carried out in the Capital-based Central Veterinary Laboratory detected bird flu in those poultry farms. He said some samples of dead chickens were sent to the Capital two weeks ago. Four teams of experts led by six doctors culled the chickens and their feed. The teams culled 828 chickens at Kauseghari, 1,100 in Sarangkot, 110 in Batulechaur and 1,500 in Simpani. The teams asked the poultry farmers not to keep chickens in the farms for two months.

“We held a meeting yesterday (Tuesday) under the chairmanship of the Chief District Officer. After the necessary preparation, the culling has begun from Wednesday,” said Sharma. He said the bird flu has high risk in Pokhara as it is the country’s tourist hub and has many lakes.

The poultry farmers complained that authorities concerned acted irresponsibly and informed them about the flu very late. “The chickens died in numbers from December 31. But, the authorities at that time said there was no any serious disease. They came here yesterday for inspection and started culling from today. Had they informed us on time, we would not have spent thousands of rupees on feed,” said Bhishma Thakuri, a poultry farmer.

Systemic distribution of different low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses in chicken

Since we were able to isolate viable virus from brain and lung of H7N1 low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV) infected chickens, we here examined the distribution of different LPAIV strains in chickens by measuring the viral AI RNA load in multiple organs. Subtypes of H5 (H5N1, H5N2), H7 (H7N1, H7N7) and H9 (H9N2), of chicken (H5N2, H7N1, H7N7, H9N2), or mallard (H5N1) origin were tested.

The actual presence of viable virus was evaluated with virus isolation in organs of H7N7 inoculated chickens.FindingsViral RNA was found by PCR in lung, brain, intestine, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, heart, liver, kidney and spleen from chickens infected with chicken isolated LPAIV H5N2, H7N1, H7N7 or H9N2. H7N7 virus could be isolated from lung, ileum, heart, liver, kidney and spleen, but not from brain, which was in agreement with the data from the PCR.

Infection with mallard isolated H5N1 LPAIV resulted in viral RNA detection in lung and peripheral blood mononuclear cells only.

Conclusion: We speculate that chicken isolated LPAI viruses are spreading systemically in chicken, independently of the strain.

Ebola (Bats) / Bangladesh

The terrifying hemorrhagic fever known as Ebola virus, or one of its relatives, seems to have made its way into Asia, specifically Bangladesh, a new report indicates. The new study, published in the February 2013 issue of the CDC journal Emerging Infectious Diseases and conduced by the EcoHealth Alliance, indicates that bats in Bangladesh could be an animal reservoir for the disease.

There haven't been any reported cases of Ebola in the country, but this means there is potential. Between April 2012 and March 2011, researchers tested several species of bats for antibodies to Ebola-related viruses (evidence the virus had infected the bats and caused an immune reaction).

They found anti-Ebola antibodies in 5 of the 276 bats (3.5 percent) they tested from the region. The antibodies they found were specifically a reaction to Ebola Zaire, the most dangerous of the viral strains. This is the first time they've seen antibodies to Ebola in the area, but it's also the first screen for them.

We don't know if they've always been in the area or if the virus is spreading. What the researchers can say, though, is that this evidence extends the known range of the Zaire Ebola virus to mainland Asia. This could have important consequences for human health, they write. Authorities in Asia should be on the lookout for hemorrhagic fevers that could be Ebola, or related to Ebola.

Cuba confirms 51 cholera cases in Havana

The source has been identified as a food seller who caught cholera during a previous outbreak in eastern Cuba

Cuba's health ministry has confirmed a cholera outbreak in Havana with 51 people infected - the biggest incidence of the disease there in decades.
An official statement said health workers had detected an increase in "acute diarrhoea" in some districts, which has been established as cholera.
The source has been identified as a foodseller who caught cholera during a previous outbreak in eastern Cuba.
Doctors have been going house to house in Havana areas, checking for symptoms.
The official confirmation follows several days of speculation about an upsurge in diarrhoea in the capital, where the BBC understands a 46-year-old man died of suspected cholera earlier this month.
In the central Havana district of Cerro, where the outbreak is believed to have begun, cafes and restaurants have been closed and only the sale of sealed food and drink is permitted.
The outbreak was detected on 6 January. According to the health ministry, measures taken since then mean the disease is in its "extinction phase".
People are being urged to take care with hygiene and in the preparation of food.
Cholera is carried by contaminated water or food. It causes severe dehydration through diarrhoea and can prove fatal if untreated.
Until last July, Cuba had not experienced any significant outbreak since well before the 1959 revolution.X  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-21023366
