The occurrence of a novel coronavirus
As of 10/12/2012
According to the World Health Organization (WHO)
of 30 November 2012 affected the world nine people on the first identified case of a patient who died in June 2012 from Saudi Arabia novel coronavirus. Is in newly reported cases
by subsequent laboratory diagnostic confirmation
of diseases in Saudi Arabia (October 2012) and
Jordan (April 2012).
All cases had a severe course of disease,
Five patients have died so far from the infection. Two deaths occurred in Jordan. In Saudi Arabia, five people infected with the virus, three died. In Qatar
affected two patients. One of the two Qataris was treated in a German hospital and pulmonary center
Discharged November, the other patient is in England
treated and is also on the mend.
Three of the five cases from Saudi Arabia, including two deaths, were among a family history. Another
Person in the family became ill with similar symptoms, but was negative for the novel coronavirus
tested (using the polymerase chain reaction, PCR) and is
now healthy again.

Jordan announced to the WHO, have it there in April
2012, a cluster of cases with hard running
Pneumonia given. The Ministry of Health in Amman, WHO had asked for help. A
WHO team traveled to the country and announced on 24 April with,
that none of the known coronaviruses was detected.
After October, the novel coronavirus was discovered, sent the Jordanian Ministry of Health since April preserved samples of these patients

Those cases in Saudi Arabia and Jordan, which are connected with each other epidemiologically could, by
limited human-to-human transmission have been caused, but also an exposure to a
another common source of infection is possible. However, as potential sources of infection and modes of transmission
still unknown, it is recommended until further evidence, the care of patients under

Suparmin - Jambi, bird flu virus began attacking poultry in Jambi and lead to death of hundreds of chicken and chicken Arab.
As stated by the Head of Department of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Jambi, Sepdinal.
Sepdinal said the bird flu virus has attacked poultry in two villages, the Village and Village Bejoan Nagasari. For that it go directly to the site to carry out rescue and preventive measures of the disease.
"In Nagasari recorded 600 dead birds in the village of Bejoan recorded 100 birds that died,

The new type of bird flu virus found in Indonesia
The new type of bird flu virus found in Indonesia
Updated on 10 December 2012, 22:06 AEST
Director of Animal Health, Ministry of Agriculture, told Radio Australia Pujiatmoko explaining Ministry have detected the presence of a new type derived from bird flu since last September.
Certainty new type of bird flu virus in the world known as Avian Influenzaafter passing through a series of tests in a laboratory involving researchers.
The Ministry of Agriculture said the bird flu virus newly discovered variant of the H5N1 strain.
"Sub her type 2.3.2 which is a new finding in Indonesia different from AI virus that has been there, of 2.1," said Pujiatmoko.
He continued finding new types of bird flu in Indonesia is expected because of the bird flu virus mutation that still do detailed research.
Another possibility that is due to the introduction of bird flu virus outside of migratory birds such as wild ducks and poultry imports from abroad.
For the prevention of the spread, the Ministry has been instructed to do persiapaan genocide and Local Government advised not maintain ducks unite with other types of birds to the farmers.
"We will also coordinate with the Ministry of Health about the findings of a new type of AI that the findings in humans, "said Pujiatmoko.
So far there have been no reports of a new type strain of bird flu in humans in Indonesia.
Type of bird flu virus has previously been found in India, Vietnam and China.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Entrepreneurs Association of Local Poultry has reported more than 300 thousand ducks died last week.
Death ducks recently discovered in four provinces of the island of Java, West Java, Central Java, East Java and Yogyakarta.
"We are asking the Government to stop the import ban breeding ducks and duck mixing seeds with less local and offshore," said Ade Zulkarnaen Businessmen's Association Local Poultry Indonesia.
Researchers Avian Influenza from Airlangga University, Surabaya, CA. Nidom states government needs to do a thorough research related to these new findings, especially related problems that usually survive death duck and Cuma is a carrier of the virus alone.
Indo- East Java ducks dropping like flies
Tuesday, December 11, 2012
JAKARTA. Gong signs to be alert against bird flu again sounded. This is because hundreds of thousands of ducks in central Java duck died from the bird flu virus, the government began to prepare control measures.
Ministry of Health together with veterinary experts in eight central laboratory analyzed the spread of bird flu virus to poultry other than ducks. Virus possessed at least 350,000 ducks in the last month in West Java, Central Java, East Java and Yogyakarta in Indonesia is relatively new, the clade 2.3.2. So far, spread of H5N1 virus in Indonesia comes from clade 1.2 (KONTAN, December 8, 2012).
"I have information from friends in several districts in East Java already infected," said Mujiono, a duck breeder Banyuwangi origin. But he admitted until now still safe pet ducks 3000, has not contracted the bird flu virus. "Alhamdulillah not infected," he said yesterday. Some of the areas that the bird flu is Blitar, Tulungagung, Jombang, Kediri and Bangkalan Madura.
So far, bird flu has not been attacking chickens. However, according to the Chairman of the Federation of Indonesian Poultry Don P. Sutoyo, commercial farms both large and small continue to anticipate.
Director General of Ministry of Agriculture Livestock and Animal Health, Gratitude Iwantoro, on December 6, 2012, released a circular on control of bird flu in ducks. Circular spread to at least 23 agencies, including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Forestry, the WHO representative in Indonesia, and a number of business associations poultry in Indonesia.
Deputy Health Minister, Ali Ghufron Mukti, said until today there has been no reported cases of bird flu in humans. However, the Ministry of Health has set up procedures for the handling of extraordinary events, including rapid response teams, hospitals are ready to handle bird flu patients. "We are also asking the public to avoid direct contact with poultry suspected of being infected with bird flu," wrote Ali through short message to KONTAN, Monday (10/12).
Pujiatmoko, Director of Animal Health Ministry of Agriculture, said the government was investigating whether the avian influenza virus is spread by migratory birds from abroad or through imports ducks.
He asserted that the government has banned the import of ducks from a country that has not been free of bird flu since 2005. Some countries such as Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. So far, the Ducks import from bird flu-free regions such as France and the UK.
Businessmen's Association Local Poultry Indonesia (Himpuli), Ade Zulkarnaen, doubted the import ban. The proof, as long as these ducks imported from Thailand, Indonesia and China. "How could this leak? During this import Peking duck ya from there," said Ade.
However Pujiatmoko denied. "We never issued a Request Submission (SPP) for the import of ducks from these countries," he said.
Bird flu is a vicious this time than ever before. Moreover, cases of death in ducks in large numbers just happened in the last month.

WORLD ORGANISATION FOR ANIMAL HEALTH CHIEF: RISING INSTABILITY AND WEAK VETERINARY SERVICES POSE THREAT TO WORLD SECURITY
Dr. Bernard Vallat Urges BWC Members to Strengthen Veterinary Services as Key Players for Animal Health Surveillance, Response and Biosafety
10 December 2012
GENEVA (Embargoed until 11 a.m. Geneva time on Monday 10 December, issued as received) - Speaking today at the opening session of the Meeting of States parties to the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), the Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), Dr. Bernard Vallat, called for action against the rising threat that animal pathogens pose to the world’s security
Accidental or deliberate release of animal pathogens can have disastrous repercussions for public health, economies, and social stability because 60% of human infectious diseases originate from animals (zoonoses) and, infectious diseases of animals also cause huge losses to agriculture. Because of these impacts, most agents that can be used for bioweapons are animal pathogens.
Effective surveillance, early detection and rapid response mechanisms for animal diseases that comply with OIE international standards are the most effective defense against any infectious animal disease outbreak, whether the cause is natural, accidental or intentional. OIE Laboratory Standards for bio risk management will also protect against accidental release of pathogens from laboratories and guard against pathogens falling into the wrong hands.
Dr. Vallat said: “The best way to protect the entire world from rising bio-threats is to ensure that all national Veterinary Services comply with OIE international standards on quality. This must be a basis for bio risk management policies.”
Unfortunately today, the quality of surveillance and response mechanisms for animal diseases varies from country to country, and in our globalized world weaknesses in one country pose a threat to all others.
Today’s movements of people, animals and consumer goods enables the rapid global spread of infectious animal diseases: SARS, avian flu, mad cow disease, and Ebola are all examples highlighting the potentially disastrous consequences that animal pathogens can pose if they are not eliminated at their primary source.
“It is a shared responsibility of governments to use all means available and apply existing recommendations that we give to prevent and control animal diseases. This will reduce the significant risks that these pathogens present,” Dr. Vallat stressed. “All available channels for convincing all decision makers should be used in that objective,” he further said.
Destroying and sequestrating Rinderpest virus
In May 2011, OIE declared the global eradication of rinderpest, also known as ‘cattle plague’ because of its devastating impacts on livestock. One year after OIE’s declaration of global freedom the virus remains stored in dozens of laboratories across the world, and with disease no longer present in animals the only way a rinderpest outbreak could occur today is if virus escaped from a laboratory.
To ensure that the world remains free from rinderpest, OIE is calling on all countries to destroy remaining stocks of rinderpest virus or make sure that virus is transferred to an approved reference laboratory. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have also called a moratorium on research using the live rinderpest virus.
Rinderpest was arguably the first bio-weapon (used in the 13th century) and was amongst other animal pathogens to be developed for warfare during the 20th century.

Update on event information
The most significant recent epidemiological development is the retrospective identification of novel coronavirus in
preserved biological samples from two fatal cases of severe pneumonia in Jordan in April 2012. The two cases
were part of a cluster of eleven cases with respiratory symptoms linked in time and space to a hospital near
Amman, Jordan. Eight of the cases in the cluster were healthcare workers. The two confirmed cases were reported
on 30 November 2012 through the Event Information Site for International Health Regulation Focal Points and in a
WHO press statement. A cluster of this size, especially when involving healthcare workers, raises questions about
the possibility of human-to-human transmission. It is important to note, however, that there are reports that some
or all of the nine non-fatal cases in the cluster were also tested for novel coronavirus, yet epidemiological
information about this remains limited.
ECDC, jointly with WHO, has mapped the capacity of virology reference laboratories in EU/EEA Member States with
regard to the novel coronavirus (RT-PCR/sequencing assay). So far, approximately 250 people have been tested
for the novel coronavirus in the EU since the first case was reported. Except for the two confirmed cases, which
were referred to the UK and Germany, none of the tests were positive. The results of this survey were published in
Eurosurveillance on 6 December 2012.

Novel coronavirus: ECDC updates its risk assessment
10 Dec 2012
|
ECDC
ECDC has published another update of its risk assessment on the novel coronavirus. Two cases in Jordan have retrospectively been confirmed. These additional cases have increased the geographical area in which transmission of the virus has occurred. The two fatal cases were part of a cluster of 11 patients with respiratory symptoms linked to a hospital. The limited information available about this outbreak does not allow for an assessment of whether human-to-human transmission has occurred or indeed whether the cases in this cluster had the same cause.
The ECDC risk assessment highlights that healthcare workers should be alerted to the possibility of attending to patients who meet specific characteristics which would require an investigation according to the WHO case definition. The new WHO recommendations favour the investigation of patients returning from the Arabian Peninsula or its neighbouring countries, but do not exclude the testing of patients with unexplained pneumonia in the absence of such travel. A specific serological test and seroepidemiological studies are needed to investigate the occurrence of mild and asymptomatic infections. The diagnostic capacity for novel coronavirus is adequate in the EU. This is confirmed by a newly published article in Eurosurveillance on the results of a survey undertaken by ECDC and WHO. The virus genome is in the public domain and mechanisms for sharing samples and diagnostic methods between countries and laboratories are in place. As of 4 December 2012, a total of nine laboratory-confirmed cases of severe pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus have been reported to WHO. Five of the nine cases were fatal. Onset of disease was from April to October 2012 and all cases were resident in Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Jordan during the presumed 10 days incubation period. ECDC endorses the WHO travel advice and does not advise any travel or trade restrictions for Saudi Arabia or Qatar. http://ecdc.europa.eu/en/press/news/Lists/News/ECDC_DispForm.aspx?List=32e43ee8-e230-4424-a783-85742124029a&ID=804 |

West Java Provincial Health Office destroyed bird flu affected chickens
Chairman of the Central Board (DPP) Himpuli, Ade M Zulkarnain, urged the government to stop the import of breeding ducks that have been done in Indonesia.
"Ducks imports must be stopped," said Ade told Reuters on Monday (10/12). According to him, the policy needs to be done to tackle bird flu outbreak that occurred in the past week.
Ade explained that the government must re-enable the poultry restructuring policy which had been halted.Digalakan massive restructuring program poultry from 2007 to 2010.
Beware, Bird Flu Strikes Back
About 50 percent of the population of ducks in Indonesia have died from bird flu disease. The spread of the virus H5NI happened in the last ten days of the alleged existence of ducks imported.
Data from the Association of Local Poultry Farmers Indonesia (Himpuli) states, the total duck population is maintained rancher reach as many as 53 million birds.
Indonesia Sentra most ducks in a number of places including Cirebon West Java, Central Java and East Java. "The case of ducks died of bird flu spread in some areas,'' said Chairman of the Central Board (DPP) Himpuli, Ade M Zulkarnain, told Reuters on Monday (10/12).
For example in Cirebon, Brebes, Starch, Mojokerto, Blitar, Tulungagung, and Pasuruan. In fact, the duck population in Pati, Central Java, died about 85 per cent of the total population. While the duck deaths from bird flu in Sukabumi undiscovered.
According to Ade, the bird flu attack this time was the vicious than ever before. Moreover, cases of death in ducks in large numbers just happened in the past month.

Philippine gov't tries to prevent disease outbreak in typhoon-hit areas
The Philippine government urged Saturday the people in the evacuation centers in typhoon ravaged-areas to keep their temporary shelters clean to prevent the spread of diseases.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, in an interview over a state-run radio station, said that the Department of Health (DOH) is also doing everything to ensure the health of 212,000 individuals who have been staying in 291 evacuation centers after they were displaced by Typhoon Bopha (local name Pablo).
"The Department of Health is doing what it can in the evacuation areas to make sure that disease doesn't spread. But we also need the cooperation of the evacuees themselves to keep their areas clean," she said.

Free ride is over
Dear , FOREIGN and DOMESTIC GOV'TS, HOSPITALS, SCIENTIFIC ENTITIES AND GOVERNING HEALTH BODIES.
After reading my news for over 8 years, the time has come for some donations. I recently had a heart attack and can no longer work full time. To continue this site without some financial help is now going to be impossible.
Some of you may be happy about this and SOME of you will soon be searching for news in only a very few other places and even then, you will not get all available information. To keep the free flow of disease news flowing takes a lot of time..a LOT. As fast as I can find and post on these outbreaks, is as fast as you can get it.
This has actually become a free gov't and public service that I have never made a dime from. Now I am asking you for some help.
I always know most, if not all information on the web, concerning outbreak of disease, or outbreaks of violence and war news. Soon, if Syria uses some chemical weapons, I will be posting reports on that also..
If there are any interested parties, I am able to work on assignment or any specific disease outbreaks. Contact me thru Email for further info.

CHP closely monitors a probable case of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
6 December 2012 |
The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (December 6) received a report from the health authority of Macao concerning a probable case of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) affecting a 51-year-old female Macao resident who had undergone a brain operation in a private hospital in Hong Kong. According to the health authority of Macao, the woman who developed progressive dementia with limbs spasm, unstable gait, muscle twitching and visual disturbance suggestive of CJD, has been admitted to a hospital in Macao on October 30. Her clinical diagnosis was sporadic CJD and the patient is now in severe condition. Investigation by the Macao health authority revealed that the woman had received a brain surgery in a private hospital in Hong Kong on September 19. Upon receipt of the report, the CHP acted in accordance with the international practice and advised the hospital to contact the patients who had undergone procedures using the same set of instruments as the patient since September 19. According to the current understanding, the transmission risk is extremely low. The contact tracing is a precautionary measure. A CHP spokesman said, "CJD is a rare disease that affects the brain and is thought to be caused by the build-up of an abnormal, transmissible protein called 'prion' in the brain." The spokesman said surgical instruments used on the patient should have been sterilised but may not be enough to eradicate the prions which are the causing agents of the disease. Contact tracing conducted by the hospital is under way. The clinical feature of CJD is characterised by dementia and difficulties in walking. Early symptoms include memory loss, unsteady gait and loss of co-ordination of limbs. These dementia-like symptoms will worsen and twitching of limbs and trunk will occur. Besides, visual disturbance, abnormal behaviour and seizures can occur. Most patients die within one to two years after onset of symptoms. Since CJD is not transmitted through casual contact, isolation of patients is not necessary. To prevent the disease from spreading, tissue or organ transplant from any CJD patients or re-use of potentially contaminated surgical instruments should be avoided. Genome sequence of new UK coronavirus published
The completed whole genome sequence from the UK case of confirmed novel coronavirus that was diagnosed in September 2012 has been published this week.
Scientists at the Health Protection Agency (HPA) have been able to painstakingly piece together the entire virus from small amounts of material, with a view to helping determine its origin and the creation of therapies for the disease.
It is hoped researchers can establish how closely the UK case is linked to the first case of confirmed novel coronavirus, which was diagnosed in a patient from Saudi Arabia in June who subsequently died.
Currently, it is believed that there were independent sources of infection, while the closest relative to this coronavirus is thought to be a bat virus identified in 2008 in the Netherlands.
Professor Maria Zambon, director of the HPA's reference microbiology services, said: "Rapid disclosure of data enables diverse groups of scientists to study the virus in real time to help with the global health response and HPA are pleased to contribute to that."
The speed of this response reflects the lessons learned following the high-profile SARS outbreak in 2002-03.
To view the sequence see HPA.

Contamination is not by any influenza virus
Tests done by the Instituto Evandro Chagas to see if the contamination occurred for some sort of flu viruses, including H1N1, came back negative - in 19 people infected in Curuçá Municipal Hospital in northeast Pará. But still no diagnosis to confirm the cause of the contamination.
Yesterday, the Municipal Health Curuçá asked the State to transfer the six patients who remain hospitalized in the unit where the contamination happened, to be made a new disinfection in hospital. A State Department of Health (Sespa) reported that three patients who were hospitalized were discharged. These are two women who were at St. Joseph Hospital in Castlebay, and another who was referred to a private clinic in Bethlehem and that there was no need to be hospitalized. A feeling of being at risk has left the population Curuçá startled.
The evil that affected 19 people may have contributed to the death of a 17 year old first name of Jennifer. Admitted to the Hospital Barros Barreto, along with three other nursing techniques and more secretary of the Municipal Hospital, isolated technique in nursing Cordovil Edna Cristina said that compared to the period when he reached the hospital, the picture has improved, but the oscillating symptoms still remain.
"I feel better, but there are times when we feel bad, we are well another time. I still feel dizzy, pain in the chest and neck, "he said. Sespa disclose within 15 days the results of tests done on patients Curuçá
Bernardo Cardoso (c) told reporters that tests ruled out contamination by influenza viruses, including influenza A (H1N1)
The State Department of Public Health (Sespa) continues to investigate the cause of the disease that affects 19 people, residents of the city of Curuçá in northeastern Pará, and stipulated a deadline of 15 days to disseminate the results of all tests that are being performed by Instituto Evandro Chagas (IEC) and the Central Laboratory of the State (Lacen). In an interview on the afternoon of Tuesday (4), the director of the Department of Endemic Disease Control, Bernardo Cardoso, said that the tests were negative for common viruses like Influenza, including Influenza A (H1N1). However, several tests are still being conducted by the IEC and Lacen.
The main symptoms of the patients are fever, shortness of breath, oliguria (reduced urine volume), hypotension, hypoglycemia, bradycardia (slow heart rate) and hemorrhagic manifestations in the digestive system. Therefore, samples were taken from nasal and pharyngeal secretions of patients as well as blood for a series of laboratory tests such as blood culture and research of several viruses.
Bernardo Cardoso said the Sespa currently works with the following assumptions: poisoning and contamination by bacteria, viruses and fungus. For investigation of possible poisoning, the Department will work with the Toxicology Laboratory of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), which examine the spilled accidentally in Curuçá Municipal Hospital, originally named as causing the problem.
The director emphasized that the state government, through Sespa, intensified work to discover the cause of the disease, "it remains unclear to doctors, specialists and researchers."
The director of Lacen, Licinius Lira, explained that laboratory investigations require time, because you have to wait for the possible cause of the disease to proliferate in the laboratory and can be identified. The Lacen also is analyzing samples of water that supplies the Hospital Curuçá.
The director of the Health Surveillance Sespa, Nobre Guimarães Rosa, said at the time, 14 patients remain hospitalized, including five in the University Hospital João de Barros Barreto, a Hospital in Port-day, two in the Women's Health Hospital, and six in Curuçá . She also said that the 3rd Regional Health Center is providing Sespa beds in Castlebay (municipality northeast region) to receive patients from Curuçá to the local hospital can be completely disinfected.
As Nobre Guimarães Rosa, technical areas of Epidemiology and Health Surveillance continue working in the municipality, to reassure the population.
