According to the Consolata missionary Richard Larose, estimated to have killed at least 34 people in recent months with Ebola. Two of the victims were a woman who gave birth and the baby. Another five were health professionals. On the other hand, if a nurse who was hospitalized with infection, left good indication as to the importance of prevention. The training is free of danger and his mother, who dealt closely with her, was not infected. Since he sensed the first cases of the disease in Isiro, were sent teams of World Health Organization, Doctors Without Borders, and the ministry of Health of the Congo to the ground to distribute protective equipment and provide information. And a great effort was made to encourage people to take precautions. Still, many can be avoided hospitals for fear of being contaminated or placed in isolation, which can hinder the control of the virus, says Larose.

Dwindling Crows Worry Priests, Devotees During 'Pind Daan

Gaya, Oct 15 (IANS): The dwindling number of crows here is giving sleepless nights to Hindu priests and devotees during the ongoing pind daan, religious rites seeking salvation for the dead from the cycle of rebirth.
Crows are considered central to the age-old pind daan rituals, following which the devotees offer them food as they are believed to be the ancestors of Hindus. The priests are neither bird lovers nor environmentalists, but worried nonetheless over fthe ast declining numbers of crows in this ancient town.
"The situation is alarming. There is a scarcity of crows here, which has hit the pind daan rituals" (during the fortnight-long pitrapaksh period)," priest Mahesh Lal Gupt told IANS.
Gupt blamed the increase of cellphone towers for the death of crows. Others said that mindless cutting of trees in the town and surrounding areas led to the disappearance of crows.
Hundreds of crows have died in Bihar this year, particularly in Gaya, Banka, Nawada, Jamui, Bhagalpur, Munger and Aurangabad districts because of bird flu. Last year, neighbouring Jharkhand had reported similar mass deaths of crows.
The fortnight-long pitrapaksh period during which Hindus consider it auspicious to offer pind daan began last month.
"The soul of a deceased keeps wandering till this ritual is performed by male descendants of the dead," Rajan Sijaur, another priest told IANS.
Pind daan is traditionally offered by Hindus, but historical records available with priests show that some Muslims also performed the ritual in the past.
Legend has it that Lord Rama performed this religious rite for his father, king Dasarath.  http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=152626

Mixed flu strain in Mizo man

Mixed flu strain in Mizo man

Researchers from the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) in Kolkata have spotted a classical case of 'sporadic reassortment' — mixing of genetic material from swine and human origin viruses — in an influenza A viral strain with H1N2 subtype.1 The study supports the possibility of 'reassortment events' during influenza season when infectivity is high and two different subtypes of the virus circulate together in the same geographical location.

No new coronavirus cases since Sept 22

Geneva, 3 hours, 52 minutes ago

No new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus have been reported since September 22 even as governments of Saudi, Qatar and the United Kingdom are working to gain a better understanding of the disease and likely source of infection.

So far, after careful follow-up of close contacts of the two confirmed cases, and a heightened state of global surveillance , there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the virus, said a World Health Organisation (WHO) report.

WHO is supporting the national authorities in their ongoing investigation, and has deployed experts to Saudi and Qatar as part of an international team.

These and future epidemiological and scientific studies will lead to a better understanding of the novel coronavirus, it stated.

WHO said it continues to work with the ministries of health and other international partners to coordinate actions for timely detection, rapid diagnosis and case management of infection caused by the novel coronavirus, should the need arise.

Based on this overall situation, WHO is encouraging member states to continue with their routine surveillance to ensure early detection and rapid response to all potential public health threats.   http://www.tradearabia.com/news/HEAL_223728.html?

Woman suspected to have SARS-related bug tests negative

by Claire Huang Jingyi
SINGAPORE - Tests have confirmed that a woman suspected of being infected with a variant of the influenza bug that caused the SARS epidemic in 2002 does not have the infection.

A false tweet was circulated online at about 4pm yesterday telling netizens to stay away from the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) because it has a patient who has the novel coronavirus.

The patient was admitted to the SGH after having travelled from Kuwait to Singapore, with a two-hour transit in Qatar.

While she was initially suspected to be infected with the novel coronavirus, the SGH said laboratory tests have confirmed that she does not have the infection.

The hospital said her illness is linked to the influenza A or H1N1 infection, which is one of the circulating seasonal influenza strains.

It added that the patient has a history of chronic disease and as such, would be at a higher risk  http://www.todayonline.com/Hotnews/EDC121012-0000125/Woman-suspected-to-have-SARS-related-bug-tests-negative

CDC reports 185 cases of fungal meningitis in outbreak

CDC
CDC officials, including Dr. John Jernigan, center, discuss the ongoing outbreak of fungal meningitis in the U.S.
A few more people have been diagnosed with a rare form of fungal meningitis linked to contaminated back pain injections, federal health officials said Friday.
A case was reported in Texas, bringing the total number of patients diagnosed to 185, with 14 deaths, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Overall, patients have been diagnosed in 12 states.
The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration are working to confirm the source of the contamination, which is traced to three lots of steroid injections made at a Framingham, Massachusetts pharmacy. All of the drugs made at the pharmacy, the New England Compounding Center, have been recalled.
The CDC suggests more cases will turn up. The two molds that have been found in patients grow slowly and can cause very subtle symptoms, at least at first.   http://vitals.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/12/14397656-cdc-reports-185-cases-of-fungal-meningitis-in-outbreak?lite

CDC: Tests may not detect meningitis fungus

Cases rise to 170 in 11 states
UPDATED 5:22 PM EDT Oct 11, 2012

(CNN) —
Patients whose fungal tests are negative may still be at risk in a meningitis outbreak, as the fungus involved can be difficult to detect, federal health officials said Thursday.
Cases of the non-contagious fungal meningitis rose to 170 in 11 states as of Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Fourteen people have died.

The cases have been linked to injections of contaminated steroid injection made by the Massachusetts-based New England Compounding Center.

Some 14,000 people may have received the injections, the CDC said Thursday, an increase from its previous estimate of 13,000.

Health officials have been able to contact more than 90% of the patients to warn them, officials said.

But "we aren't out of the woods yet," said Dr. J. Todd Weber, incident manager of the multistate outbreak for the CDC.

While the investigation is ongoing, 50 vials of the injection have tested positive for fungus. Those vials were found in the NECC facility, as well as in clinics that received the medication.

CDC's fungal disease laboratory has found the fungus Exserohilum in 10 meningitis patients, and the fungus Aspergillus in one patient.

Exserohilum is new territory for health officials, as it's not typically seen, Weber told reporters Thursday.

However, it can be difficult to find, meaning a patient whose fungal test is negative is not in the clear. Doctors are encouraged to be diligent in following up with patients, he said.

In addition, symptoms from Exserohilum can take a long time to develop. Patients who received the injections should remain vigilant for "at least several months after injection," Weber said.
The average period in which infections are seen is about two weeks, with the longest being 42 days, officials said. However, the longest period a patient may go before developing the disease is not known.

Curing the infection requires a long course of treatment. The CDC is recommending two anti-fungal drugs, which are very strong and can be difficult for patients to tolerate, Weber said.

INDIA-Uncommon flu goes viral in city

PRITHA CHATTERJEE

Posted: Tuesday, Oct 09, 2012 at 0043 hrs ISTNew Delhi: Doctors grapple with a severe flu-like strain; dengue combines with typhoid to make patients suffer more
The city’s health officials, already grappling with a spurt in dengue and malaria cases over the past few weeks, have a stupefying problem on hand as the common viral flu has taken a rather aggressive form.
The spectrum of virals and similar infections this season have become a reason to worry as hospitals have reported that patients afflicted with the illnesses were showing severe symptoms and longer recovery period.
“The old adage that any fever beyond 4-6 days is usually not a viral has taken a beating. We have now begun to question that theory, considering the disease profile of the patients we are getting,” Dr S Chatterjee, senior consultant in Apollo Hospital’s internal medicine department, said.
The recovery time, doctors said, has gone up to 10 to 12 days and the symptoms also varied.

“We have a range of symptoms from fever and persistent joint pain to symptoms resembling encephalitis, meningitis and hepatitis. We are calling them viral-like diseases because most are showing negative test results for all identified viruses. Even the atypical pathogen profile, a test that diagnoses virals like influenza and H1N1 outside the spectrum of dengue, chikungunya and viral hepatitis, is not showing positive results,” Dr Vikas Ahluwalia of Max Hospital, Saket, said.
In such a situation, doctors put these diseases in the broad category of “viral-like symptoms” - meaning the bug cannot be properly identified.
The symptoms are severe because of the longer recovery period. Doctors said patients, particularly the elderly and diabetics, are showing symptoms characteristic of the H1N1 virus such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), in which the lungs get inflamed.
Dr Atul Gogia of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said: “The viruses mutate over time and these are becoming
resistant to anti-virals just like the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. We have patients on ventilator support and have seen deaths from the flu-like symptoms. These patients had tested negative for all notifiable viral diseases such as dengue and malaria.”

Dr Ahluwalia of Max Hospital agreed. Many patients suffering from common viral-like diseases required ventilator support, he said.
“We have seen patients with all kinds of fevers... delirious with fever, aggressive rashes on the body or simply severe, prolonged joint pains characteristic of chikungunya, when the patient has actually tested negative for the bug,” he said.
This has led to a higher number of patients with low or dropping blood platelet counts.
Dr Gogia said there have been cases of two rare viruses, which cause haemoglobin levels to drop. “We have seen cases of the parvovirus, commonly known as parvo, where the haemoglobin level drops drastically. This is usually seen in patients,

Typhoid vaccine failure warning

TyphoidTyphoid fever is uncommon in England, with an estimated 350 cases occurring each year
More than 700,000 people recently immunised against typhoid may not have full protection because of a dud vaccine that has now been recalled, say experts.
Manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur MSD has recalled 88% of its stock - 16 batches - of Typhim Vi vaccine because tests found some samples were too weak.
Anyone immunised with the vaccine since January 2011 could be affected.

Smuggled chickens contain pathogenic strains with stronger, higher ability to infect humans and cause higher mortality rates - this is the Animal Health Department (MARD) in early warning.
However, instead of limiting smuggled chicken waste, the situation is even more rampant, not just chicken waste, is just not massive origin still smuggled into Vietnam.
Stock chicken waste, to similar smuggling rife Bird flu is complicated with the risk of infection to humans is very high, while the vaccine is disabled with this new strain
Information "shocking" DAH aired recently, when smuggling chicken waste from China (China) in our country the last few months than ever massivelyimportant thing is not Chicken culling, the recruiter China is entering a series of type chickens unknown origin from the Mong Cai border gate in Quang Ninh. Control squads of 2 - Customs Department Quang Ninh for trading or illegal, including chicken is particularly rife week makes the team most as white nights throughout the week. recently, team organization for security , caught 4 cases carrying chickens smuggled from the border down
The total number of chickens smuggled more than 60,000 chickens proof of origin illegally imported from China. Tightly controlled by the Tan Thanh border gate (Lang Son) should all trade areas to Mong Cai. Mong Cai Chinese Chicken included in price range 100.000d/con 2kg, radiating down their prices up consumption than in parallel with the "guise" of chicken. Own chickens is 4.000d/con wholesale prices, retail local team up 10.000d/con. At bargain prices thus making it more massive smuggling

Meanwhile, the Department of Animal Health said that the new H5N1 virus appears, but still belongs to the old branch, but there are differences compared to the pathogenic virus in the U.S. in 2011. According to Prof. Dr. Long Thanh, Director of Veterinary Diagnostic Center central, new strains appeared in July but has spread at breakneck speed from the North Central Region. "This group of viruses can features make bird flu continues to spread in the future is very high and this virus highly lethal than the old strain. It is worrying that this new virus has appeared and spread rapidly in China since the beginning of the year and we are using the vaccine does not work against them, "he said. ...
